Hi forum,
when i import a mxl or mid file then Dorico makes some strange things. If there is a quarter, then Dorico makes two eights with a tie. Any suggestions why this happens?

Bert

Dorico will be applying its note grouping rules, probably the crotchet appears at an odd place in the bar.
Well, i am using Dorico 5 Elements mainly to train my piano skills. I am loading existing sheets into Dorico and play on my midi keyboard. I really like the visual font type and ability to fit the sheet score on your screen size. Also the playback with yor favorite vst is a very good feature.
But it’s a bit strange that a music notation software doesn’t follow the notation rules. If there is a quarter in the source file then i expect it to be a quarter after import.
This is the raw material:
This is after Dorico import:
When playing, I find the two eighth notes with ties much more confusing because when you play the quarter note it is immediately obvious that you only press the key once in the bass and two keys in the treble clef.

There is an Engraving Option where you can configure if Dorico shall split such notes that cross the half bar.
Good hint. Under program settings → MusicXML-Import there is the option “note value”. If checked the imported values are the same as in the source file.

Except that Dorico is following the rules! It is your original that breaks (a number of) rules of normal engraving practice and Dorico has kindly corrected those for you.
Be aware that the MusicXML option you have chosen might lead to some unexpected results if you edit the import, because it imposes a forced duration on every note of the score.
If you upgrade to Dorico Pro you can set options to control how you want notes to be grouped (as Estigy pointed out).
Dorico Elements has access to Library > Notation Options, which is where you’ll find options for determining how notes are grouped and beamed by default. You don’t need Engraving Options and Dorico Pro for this.
Does Elements not have the XML Preferences panel to allow literal import of XML?
Yes (which you can always check by running Dorico as Elements) but previous posters had referred to note grouping options being in Engraving Options, and therefore only in Dorico Pro, which is not the case.
