Strange Midi Note Hanging Problem

I will try to make this a detailed as I can so if anyone has a solution, they don’t have to ask more questions. I have Cubase 13 pro and really no problems up to now, today, I sat down to record some piano and noticed I was getting some midi notes hanging when I released the sustain pedal, thinking my pedal may have gone bad, I went to my other piano and swapped them out but still had the same problem. I played around and found that it was only note Eb-3 and if I moved the octave button up and down, the hung note followed (changed up an octave, it moved to Eb-4, Down an octave, it moved to Eb-2) by the way I am using a Komplet Kontrol S49 Ml3.

After scratching my head, I closed Cubase and loaded Kontakt 8, fired up a bunch of different pianos and had no problem so I know its Cubase. I’m not sure what settings to go to in Cubase to see what’s going on so some help would be appreciated. What’s strange is I have have had no problems up to now and not added any new software but I did update Cubase about a week ago so…

Thanks for reading

To start off you should stick a MIDI Monitor on a MIDI Insert on the Track you are playing. That will let you see exactly which MIDI messages are occurring and when they are happening in relationship to each other.

Not exactly sure what you mean? What is a midi monitor.

A tool to visually monitor midi communication on a computer
see this Google Search result

What you’re describing sounds very much like you recorded the sustain pedal (as CC64) and then stopped the recording before releasing the pedal.

So now every time you replay that particular section, the midi notes keep going on, because the CC64 information you recorded inside the midi clip is telling your Kontakt Piano to keep the sustain pedal pressed down indefinitely.

I’m not recording, I am just playing. I have looked everywhere and for some reason I cant get a straight answer. I contacted Cubase support and I am still waiting for a reply. As I said in my main post, I came into my studio, started working on a song and certain notes, mainly Eb-3, started hanging. Not sure what’s going on and as I said before, it does not happen in Kontakt 8 stand alone so I bought Pro Tools to try out and I don’t have the problem so It’s Cubase. I’m learning Pro Tools now and I think I’ll leave Cubase alone for a while. Thanks for the replys.

So I received a reply from Steinberg Support stating that Cubase 13 Pro is no longer supported? So I guess a big f@#k you if I don’t upgrade to 14 or 15?

BTW Pro Tools is great with NO problems out of the box so Steinberg just lost a customer.

It’s hardly a f@#k you, since they didn’t leave you in the lurch.

Troubleshooting help on this Steinberg-owned user forum is very good, and fast. In many cases faster than official support, and for any old version of Steinberg product. There are experts here, but it helps to answer the questions they ask when trying to help you.

What do you mean didn’t leave me in the lurch. I paid a lot of money for that software and after a few years, they should still support it.

Well, this is an opinion.

Leaving someone in the lurch means leaving them without options, and this is not the case here, as there are many seasoned experts here who have helped many Cubase users fix a diverse array of problems, and they do so respectfully

If you prefer to complain rather than give forum members a chance to help you, more power to you. But if you want to get to the bottom of your issue a good start would be to do what @raino suggested. Maybe if you give it a chance working like this will get your problem solved

First, that is not what “leaving someone in the lurch” means, look it up, it means leaving someone without an help, which is what Steinberg did. Second, being frustrated with a company’s response is not “complaining” in my opinion, I was unhappy with how Steinberg responded, it was very curt and I didn’t feel they put any effort into helping me solve my problem, not what I expect from a company this size. Third, although ranio was kind enough to respond to my question, knowing what midi messages are occurring docent really help me “fix” the issue. I have noticed in the past that some people don’t even read other peoples full post and throw random suggestion in then, apologize for not reading the post completely.

If you have a suggestion on the cause AND a solution, I am all ears otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered posting here while also sending in a support ticket. It seems to me that your the one complaining as you didn’t give me a suggestion as to how to fix my issue.

It’s obviously a Cubase issue as I said in my original post, I can play any VST instrument in Kontakt 8 without ANY note hanging and after installing Pro Tool, no issues right out of the box either.

I’m not interested in this “back and fourth” dialogue so if you don’t have any suggestions on how to fix my issue, I would appreciate if you don’t reply to this post.

It’s not always possible to give a solution to a problem without first doing basic troubleshooting. You’re dismissing the MIDI monitor as irrelevant–because YOU don’t understand how it could be helpful–but you don’t have any idea how to investigate the issue or resolve it, right?

In your support ticket, did you just demand an immediate solution, “or else”?

That’s not how it works. If you don’t even feel like it’s worth your time to cooperate with the people trying to help you, I’m not sure why you’d think helping you is worth anyone else’s time.

That rules-out hardware–but it doesn’t mean there’s a Cubase “bug” that’s causing the issue.

Does the same issue still occur in a NEW project?

If not, you could have accidentally recorded some automation in the project you’re having issues with.

If yes, I’d see if you’re using “All MIDI Inputs” in your routing–and change it to the specific MIDI device you’re using, to see if that resolves the issue. You could see a different behavior in other DAWs because they may handle MIDI differently. I only use Cubase, and I’ve never experienced your issue.

Your case of hanging notes seems to be rather unique. It might therefore be unlikely that anyone cane give you a straight solution for your issue. Some diagnostics are required. That’s why raino asked to use a midi monitor (which is built-in in Cubase).
