Strange Pool Behavior mp3 to wav

Cubase 14 Pro Windows 11 Pro all up to date. I recently received an mp3 file and imported it into a project. I was going to convert it to a wav file in the pool but when I tried to do that Cubase told me that it was already a wav file. I must be missing a setting or something. All info appreciated.

Cubase automatically converts mp3 files into the file format defined in the project setup.
To be exact: It creates a new file, leaving the original mp3 untouched.
