Strange slur behaviour

Just installed 5.1.10.
I don’t know if it was like this before, but in this situation, it’s not a nice slur by default.

I’m sure this is no change from before. It’s just a tough example. I would raise the start point straight up by ½ spaces until it looks more normal.

Thanks.
It kind of worked out when I changed some of the slur settings in Engraving Options, however, slurs are sometimes a weak point in Dorico.
Do you really think this is a tough example?

Definitely a tough example. The slur endpoint comes to the center of the notehead, but the slur is also trying to avoid collision with the accidental, which is very close to the first notehead.

The right endpoint is also trying to avoid the flat, and there are only 4 inflection points for the shape to use.

I think it’s also an unfortunate quirk of how full the system is. In the gif below, I’m using the factory Engraving Options. It only looks as bad as your image in a few positions as I extend the bar.

slur

When doing the same with my own settings, I somehow manage to avoid that, but I changed so many slur settings that I have no idea which setting it is.

That’s very interesting.
I don’t remember exactly what I did but I think the key here is to change in Engraving Options/Slus/Avoiding Collisions: “Adjust both shoulders together”, and it will also not hurt to change in Accidentals: “Do not allow slur to bisect stem of flat” and “Do not allow slur to bisect stem of natural” which I think are both not selected by default.

Could you attach a minimal Dorico file with with these slur settings?

I tell you what I’ve changed:
In Engraving Options/Slurs/Endpoint Positioning: “Position endpoint as if beamed” and “Position stem-side end point near stem end” (both not selected by default). Also, as I said above, in Engraving Options/Slus/Avoiding Collisions: “Adjust both shoulders together” and Engraving Options/Slus/Accidentals: "“Do not allow slur to bisect stem of flat”, (also both not selected by default).
Stange thing that “Do not allow slur to bisect stem of natural” is selected by default.

I don’t think this a default.

As a test, you could (on a copy of your project) reset the project to defaults using the Library Manager and see the difference.

Definitely, it was default slur.
That was one of the first bars I wrote, then I started to change the settings.

A new project with factory settings give me

It depends of the spacing. FredGUnn already showed it.
In his first example with default settings, when the spacing hits 91.4% (as far as I can see) you will see the same slur I had.

Precisely!

I think the latter looks fine. Would it not suit your needs? There is no need IMO for the tip of the slur to be close to the note head(s).

Dorico has much better slur handling than e.g. Sibelius but there will always be some need for manual adjustments, e.g.

Yes. I’ve already said in my second post that those setting changes worked out.

You are absolutely right (and better than Finale too). Slurs are very difficult to make them look natural.
