Strange view behaviour

When I’m doing this:

I’m working in Write mode Score Galley

I go to Engrave mode Part

Going back to Write mote: Dorico goes to part, Galley

I want to go to either Part, Page mode, or Score Galley.

Dorico does the other way around:

From Engrave part to write: part Galley (I want Page view)

Then go to Score, it doesn’t stay in Galley, but goes to page view! Then I’d like to have Galley view. It seems Dorico does it exactly the way I don’t want it, two times in a row. Is there something you can change in the settings to avoid this?

I think this is all expected behavior.

  1. Dorico remembers the current state of Write mode (Galley view or Page view)
  2. Engrave mode doesn’t know about different views
  3. Dorico preserves the selected layout when changing modes

So that means:

Action Layout Mode View
Initial state Score Write Galley
Change to Engrave Score Engrave
Change to part Part Engrave
Change to Write Part Write Galley

Yes, probably you’re absolutely right. My mind works differently.

I NEVER use galley view with parts and can’t imagine somone would want to…

Your scheme is correct, but the strangest thing happens after your scheme. Change to write: part, then I understand Galley (but still I’d love to disable this, so it turns to Page mode immediately) but when I go from there to score, it changes from Galley to Page mode. There’s to my knowledge no reason to do that.

To me, it feels like this: From Engrave part I go to Write. I want Score, but Dorico doesn’t remember I was in Score before going to Engrave, so it goes to Part, Galley. I’d rather have either Score Galley or Part Page, but anyway. I’m annoyed already but when I click score, I get annoyed for the second time: first coming from Part Galley where I want Page, going to Score Page where I want Galley!

At least stay at Galley when I change from Part to Score, this feels like doing exactly the opposite of what I want two times in a row.

Sorry, it’s a small thing, but happens all the time and I’m not great at telling what my problem is in English. Anyway: I’d like to disable Part Galley mode (who doesn’t?) and I want Dorico NOT to go to page mode when I go from Part to Score. Rather do it the other way around! This is maximal annoying, in my opinion.

A part is not limited to just 1 player. You could have a percussion part, for 5 players, multiple instruments.

Or just 1 Clarinetist, having Bb and A Clarinet, and you want just to focus on their notes, still being able to enter notes for both instruments.

(Of course you could use the instrument filter in the score too)
