I am having a huge issue with natural string harmonics in Dorico 6.2. Whenever I switch layout it changes the strings I already set before, thus it changes almost everytime I change anything in other layout. This is super annoying and I can’t produce right result. Please, correct this bug!
Welcome to the forum, @Jan_Dusek!
Can you upload a short project that demonstrates this issue? And which version of Dorico are you using?
As I wrote, I use Dorico 6.2 (Version 6.2.20.6183 (Apr 24 2026))
I recorded the video. Please, check it out. I set the harmonics on strings in Violin I, when I check the layout in Print mode, it is ok in Full Score and Part. Then I switch to layout of other instrument (Oboe), and when I swith back, the strings are gone - thus all the work too.
I can’t upload a video, but I have it on youtube /ary2eJXIxxY
(Links are not allowed here, sorry).
Can you upload the actual Dorico project file here?
I am sorry, but as this is a new piece under copyright, I can’t do that.
You can cut the piece down to just a few bars that demonstrate the issue, and you can remove any non-string instruments. You can even delete the non-harmonic notes. As long as the resulting file still demonstrates the issue, it’s very helpful to see what’s going on.
Even just the 2 bars in your video, plus the steps to reproduce the issue.
Hello Jan,
welcome to the forum.
How can I have a look at your video?
If I put ary2eJXIxxY into YouTube’s search window, it will bring me nowhere. How do I complete the link, how can I proceed?
If you are new to this forum, it needs a few contributions and replies from you (some interaction), then you will be able to post links and project files.
This way the forum software makes sure to filter spam postings.
just put youtu.be before /ary2eJXIxxY
Thank you.
I can’t really follow the video, it’s a bit fast…
Have you tried the following?
Instead of using the Print Mode for previewing:
Open the Full Score in Write Mode / Page View.
Select the 1. Violin bar/system with the natural harmonics.
Press W.
This will switch directly to the Write Mode of the Violin 1 layout. Make sure to also watch it in Page View. With the same shortcut W you can change back to the Full Score. Are there any differences between the Violin 1 and the Full Score Layout?
If there are, go to the view which you prefer, select that bar again, and via the Menu “Propagate Properties…”.
Dorico allows differently set Properties for Score and Parts, which can be extremely useful. It depends how you apply the Properties (like the display of Harmonics) in the first place, Locally or Globally.
Looking closer at your video, you are inputting the Harmonics properties “Locally”, that means they will only display in the Full Score (unless you propagate…).
Harmonics (as you might have noticed) in Dorico are not actual notes, they are a property of a written note, a very clever concept, but it can also be confusing.
I tried to copy the bar into a new file, but the problem is gone. This only happens in the original file when I switch to the Oboe part layout and back. Weird…
Any ideas?
I can send you the score by email if you wish, but I prefer not to share the whole original file here.
Try to copy the file.
Check to see if the problem is still there.
If so: delete all players except oboe and string instrument on that copy
Check to see if the problem is still there.
Delete all bars after and before the bar with the problem
Check to see if the problem is still there.
If so, upload that little project.
If that single bar still has a copyright problem, alter rhytm and or notes first
You can message me by clicking on my avatar and then the Message button, but I think @k_b may have the right idea about the Set Local Properties setting.
So you make a change in the score, switch to the oboe part and then back to the score, and the change is gone? Hmm, then that wouldn’t be the issue that @k_b suggested, since your change should certainly persist in the same layout you were working in.
Feel free to send me the project with instructions on how to reproduce the issue.
I have somehow achieved now that I could produce pdf with right notation. I will try to explore what makes this issue later but it is really annyoing. The problem happens when I switch from strings or full score to solo Oboe and back.
Jan, it is not clear what you mean by switching.
Are you switching between Write Mode and Engrave Mode?
Or are you in one of these two Modes and switch between Full Score and Part layout?
Don’t use the Print Mode preview window for any sensible validation.
Because you are a new forum user, a hint might be useful:
Richard_Lanyon is an official from the Dorico team (Lead Software Tester for Dorico and the Steinberg Activation Manager) - as you can see by clicking onto his avatar. You can trustfully send him privately your project file.
As I wrote above, I mean switching layouts, no matter in which mode - either Write or Engrave or Print.
Once I set the harmonics right in the write mode and then I switch to Oboe layout, they are gone.
Yes, that is exactly what I experience.
I can’t send you a private message, maybe because I am new here.
Unfortunately, I don’t see any option to send the message straight to you.
