Struggling with MusicXML Import

For a few years now, I’ve used StaffPad to sketch ideas, then transfer them to Dorico to flesh those ideas out via the MusicXML export/import process. It’s been a few months since I last did this and now, the import is no longer using my default settings of NotePerformer, but forcing a change to Iconica Sketch, which for some reason is sounding terrible in comparison. Trying to change to NotePerformer under the Play section is causing everything to play on the wrong instrument. Never having the need to change any of this, I’m a little lost and could use some pointers please.

If you’ve changed the Playback Template, and everything is on the wrong instrument, that suggests that the instrument definitions in the XML was wrong to start with.

Can you supply a sample XML file; and/or a Dorico project file?

If you check the Play page of Preferences, you can specify that the default playback template for a new project should be NotePerformer. Make sure that is set correctly, and hopefully you’ll find that when you next open a MusicXML file, the NotePerformer template is applied automatically.
