Sub-brackets joining instruments of the same "sub-family"

My apologies if this has already been addressed, but if it has, I haven’t been able to find it.

I’m trying to create a score where players in a section play more than one instrument in the same family: for example, there are two bassoons, and the second bassoonist will occasionally play contrabassoon. Dorico is brilliant at handling the instrument changes, but it doesn’t automatically bracket the two players together unless they’re playing the exact same instrument—it doesn’t even bracket the contrabassoon with the wind section. The process of bracketing them manually is complicated, because when I go into Engrave mode to add the bracket, the second instrument (i.e., contrabasson) isn’t visible, so I can’t add the bracket unless I add music first. (I also really want to avoid doing this one flow at a time, as the piece I’m working on will have roughly 30 movements.) Any suggestions for a way around this, or to request that they’re bracketed automatically? Thanks!

Can you add one note to the contrabassoon, add the bracket, and then erase the extra note?

Yes, I can do this, and it’s what I’m doing so far, but it resets for each flow, so it ends up being very time-consuming.

In general Dorico certainly should bracket bassoons and contrabassoons together, depending of course on the bracketing approach you’ve chosen on the Brackets and Braces page of Layout Options. If you’re finding this not to be the case, can you perhaps attach a cut-down version of your project here so we can take a look?

Gladly.

By the way, how can I make instruments of the same type look like this, with the instrument name between the staves? I’ve been looking everywhere. (Sorry for the slight detour.)

I think Chris’s point is that it’s not possible to have automatic sub-brackets that include related instruments, e.g. Picc/Flute/Alto Flute, Oboe/Cor Anglais, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Bassoon/Contrabassoon.

It’s in Library > Engraving Options > Staff Labels

Thank you, yes. I meant sub-brackets. My apologies.**
