I would like to suggest a small improvement to lyric editing.
When opening the Lyrics popover with Shift+L on a note that already contains lyrics, the text cursor is placed at the end of the existing lyric. Since Dorico automatically selects the next syllable after pressing Space, I often expect the same behavior when I start a new editing session. I start typing, only to realize later that I have appended text to the first syllable instead of replacing it.
Would it be possible to automatically select the existing lyric when opening the popover, or perhaps offer this as an optional preference?
After working extensively with lyrics over the last couple of weeks, I found that switching between the behavior of the first syllable and all subsequent syllables slowed down the workflow more than expected.
Thank you for all your suggestions. Yes, Cmd+A works fine. However, it’s really all about muscle memory. Since each subsequent syllable is automatically selected, the brain tends to expect the same behavior when starting an editing session as well.
One example that I find very useful is the tuplets popover: when you open it, 3:2 is already selected. If you want to replace it, there is no need to press Cmd+A first.
I would love to see lyrics work in a similar way. At least, as I mentioned before, it could be offered as an optional setting.
And somebody would probably argue that this creates a risk of accidentally deleting a syllable instead of correcting it. But even then, retyping a single syllable is often much faster than manually moving the cursor and fixing the text at a specific position.
