Suggestion re l.v. ties

I would welcome an option to align the right-hand ends of laissez vibrer ties on chords. They can look a bit ragged at present.

Is there a way to change the default length on these?

Not sure but if then in engraving option I would say.

Yes, there are options on the Ties page of Engraving Options for the default length of l.v. ties.
