Suggestions for Dot scaling problem?

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I really appreciate this forum!

I know this has come up before, but it’s been described as “niche” or “edge-case”. Unfortunately I run into this problem very often, across different genres/contexts. Does anyone have suggestions or workarounds for dealing with the inconsistency of dot sizes? Specifically, that two dots at the same rhythmic position can’t have different sizes.

I know I can use staff text to superimpose large dots over all the small ones, but that’s not ideal either, as I’d prefer small dots on small notes.

Unfortunately there’s no setting you’re missing here, Stu. I agree this is something that Dorico should handle better.

Yes, this is a thing that I hope will be fixed soon. Also discussed at

You have a dotted normal note and a dotted cue-sized note at the same rhythmic position, and you want the dots to have the same scale as the notes. There are three cases to consider:

Image

  1. Both dots are cue sized. See this post for a way to use staff text to place a normal dot over the smaller one.
  2. The notes are in different voices and both dots have the normal size. Replace the dotted normal note with an undotted one inside a 2:3 tuplet. Then hide the tuplet number and use staff text to supply the dot after the undotted note.
  3. The notes are in the same voice and both dots have the normal size. Replace the dotted chord with an undotted one inside a 2:3 tuplet. Then hide the tuplet number and use staff text to supply the dots in different sizes. You may consolidate the dots if you wish.

In each case, you may need to use note spacing in engrave mode to provide enough space to add the dots with staff text.
