Suggestions for Identifying Editorial Markings

Hello everyone!

I am typesetting some public domain works and am including some editorial markings of my own, but I want to indicate that these markings are not original to the works. I’m having some challenges thinking of how I can indicate these markings in an obvious way in Dorico Pro 5, especially for tempo markings, dynamics, pedal markings, and articulations.

What have folks done to indicate editorial decisions in their engravings?

Welcome on board Devin!
We have parentheses/brackets, dashed/dotted lines, size and text (plus what you can define of your own) . Once chosen what’s better, an editorial note in the page templates may be the solution.

Hoping to have understood well your question

Welcome

Usual practice is to put brackets round things.

Tempo marks can just be put into square brackets: [Allegro] Add the brackets to the text in the Properties panel.

Dynamics: there is a Property for parentheses around dynamics in the Properties panel. (Not for hairpins, though. You can put a square bracket as a prefix and suffix on a “cresc.”.)

Pedal markings and articulations, you’ll have to create new playing techniques, made up of brackets either side of the symbol you want. It may be a bit of work, but once it’s done, you can use them again and again.

If I may, I wrote a couple of articlea for Scoring Notes about editorial marks with Dorico (specifically for Early Music), which also includes a link to some .doricolib library files that you can load, containing markings of this sort.
