Suggestions for New VST Instruments and Improvements to Cubase

[EN]

Hello,
I’d like to share a few suggestions regarding future virtual instruments and improvements to Cubase. Improvements for HALION.

Steinberg already offers a very comprehensive range of instruments, but I believe there is still great potential to expand this collection with expressive instruments that are currently missing or underrepresented.

The virtual instruments I’d particularly like to see added are high-quality, deeply sampled, and truly playable instruments, such as:

The accordion: diatonic and/or chromatic.

The harmonica: diatonic and/or chromatic, with bends, vibrato, breath sounds, and realistic expressive articulations.

The ocarina—in various sizes and registers, with authentic breath sounds and articulations.

Pan flute—with breath sounds, vibrato, transitions, and realistic articulations.

Riq—including various playing techniques, finger rolls, rattles, and expressive articulations.

Saxophone—soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone would be fantastic, with realistic articulations for jazz and contemporary music.

Bansuri—with authentic breath, bends, vibrato, and Indian-style ornaments.

Mandolin—including tremolo, double stops, glissandos, and realistic picking.

Banjo—especially the 5-string banjo, with several styles of

Voices

I would also like to see a more comprehensive collection of vocal instruments:

Female solo voice
Male solo voice
Children’s voice
Children’s choir
Mixed choir

Ideally, these would go beyond simple phrases and loops to become fully playable instruments, with realistic vowels, legato, nuances, vibrato, articulations, and MIDI expression.

Harp: A Particularly Important Addition
A high-quality concert harp would be greatly appreciated, especially if it included not only traditional notes but also the many sounds and noises that a real harp can produce.

For example:
Normal plucked notes
Different plucking positions
Overtones
Glissandos (a wide variety)
Tapping on the soundboard
Different types of strikes on the body or soundboard
Effect on the pegs
“Gong” effect on the bass strings
Trill effect
Xylophone-like sounds
Additional effects using sounds from pencils, coins, or other objects. This is used in harp ensembles.
String noises
Finger and hand noises
Pedal sounds
Sounds of the keys and tuning mechanism
Muted strings

String oscillation
Strumming and other advanced techniques
Resonances and sympathetic vibrations
Other realistic performance sounds

These details would make the instrument far more useful for film scoring, sound design, orchestral and contemporary composition, rather than simply being a standard harp.

FX

Whistling sounds and other human sounds in various ranges would be greatly appreciated.

Cubase Improvement: Rhythmic Panning/Balance Effect

Another feature I’d really like to see is an effect capable of creating a rhythmic left/right movement or rhythmic balance (automatic panning).

Ideally, it could be synced directly to the project’s tempo and offer:

Cubase Improvement: Rhythmic Panning/Balance Effect

Add more high-quality articulation across the entire Iconica suite.
Another feature I’d really like to see is an effect capable of creating a rhythmic left/right movement or rhythmic balance (automatic panning) (swing).

Ideally, it could be synchronized directly to the project’s tempo and offer:

1/4, 1/8, 1/16, triplets, etc.
Adjustable depth
Adjustable stereo width
Various rhythmic patterns
Sine, triangle, square, and custom waveforms
Tempo synchronization
Adjustable phase between left and right

This could be useful for creating rhythmic movement without having to manually automate the panning.

Cubase Metronome: Improved Audibility

Another improvement that, in my opinion, would really make a difference:

The metronome should remain clearly audible regardless of the volume of the instruments being played.

In complex arrangements, the metronome can become difficult to hear, even when it’s enabled.

In my opinion, it would be helpful to have an option such as:

“Metronome Always Audible / Priority Mode”

This would allow you to assign a dedicated monitoring channel to the metronome or ensure that its level remains noticeably prominent in the mix without affecting the actual balance of the project.

Possible options could include:

A dedicated metronome volume, independent of the master bus
Adjustable priority for the metronome
Optional attenuation of other sounds to highlight the metronome
A separate level for the metronome, reserved for monitoring
More pronounced accent options for the first beat
Different sounds for beats and measures

This would be particularly useful when recording, practicing, or editing instrumental music (IM).

Final Suggestion

I believe that a collection combining world instruments, expressive solo instruments, vocals, and unusual acoustic instruments could be a major asset to the Steinberg ecosystem.

In particular, instruments such as the harmonica, ocarina, pan flute, riq, saxophone, bansuri, mandolin, banjo, erhu, ukulele, waterphone, and an extremely detailed harp would bring many new creative possibilities to Cubase, HALion, and Dorico. I’m probably forgetting some others.

And if these instruments were developed with extensive sampling, realistic articulations, expression control, round robins, multiple velocity layers, microphone options, and MPE/aftertouch support where applicable, they could become much more than just sample libraries: they could feel like real instruments in the user’s hands.

Thank you for considering these suggestions, if they can be implemented in Cubase Pro 14 and later versions. I’d be very interested to hear what other users think, and which instruments they’d most like to see added.

I’m pretty sure that most, if not all, of those instruments are available from other companies.

Maybe as separate purchases, but not in Cubase. I don’t even use Retrologue or Padshop. HALion does all my synth work, and Kontakt and EastWest already handles 90% of my sample instrument needs.
In that regard, don’t think I’m unusual.
(Apologies to Tom Jones, again.)

Was this thread written by AI.

I can assure you that my response was not AI generated.
Can I help you with something else?
I know a good restaurant that can give your car an oil change?

“This thread” means the OP post.

Just look at this sht:

“Steinberg already offers a very comprehensive range of instruments, but I believe there is still great potential to expand this collection with expressive instruments that are currently missing or underrepresented.”

Who talks like that? Frikkin clankers, that’s who. :robot:

I know. Just joshing.
For the record, I’ve been known to write like that. And talk like it.
It may just be a translator program, as I think the OP is French.

(edited for a dumb spelling misteak) :winking_face_with_tongue:

No, this isn’t an AI script; these are actual suggestions.

Hello,
Yes, the author of the post is French and isn’t entirely fluent in English, which is why it’s helpful to use translations. I always provide two versions: one in English and one in French.

These are my own ideas. I simply translated my message into English, since it’s not my native language. It took me an hour to write it.

If you don’t agree with my suggestions, that’s fine. But I’d rather talk about the suggestions themselves than about whether I used AI or not.

The macro interfaces (instruments) simply don’t scale when HALion is maximised to fullscreen, especially on modern 4K displays. The instruments stay tiny, fixed in their original size, while a huge empty gap surrounds them.

Thanks for your reply.
Is there a way to resize them? Do I need to patch each VST?

Thanks for your feedback.
So far, I haven’t found any specific VSTs that could offer several improvements. For example, for the harp, the Iconica Suite and Navia Harp VSTs (I have the free version) don’t include certain effects.

… etc.

Most of the things you mention are not going to be utilized by the majority of Cubase users. Why would Steinberg spend their limited development time to include them in Cubase? These types of things are what third party software add-ons are for, in my humble opinion.

I just noticed that you even want these things “implemented in Cubase Pro 14 and later versions”. Wow. Good luck with the 14, 15, or even “later” versions.

I know you mean well. But, you are living in a dreamland if you think these things are going to happen. There are many specialized software developers whose products cost as much, or sometimes more, than Cubase itself. There is a reason for that  .

I was defending you, but never mind.

I was defending you, but never mind.

I think I may have misunderstood your response, and my translation from English wasn’t entirely accurate; so I probably read more into your words than you intended. Sorry.

I was simply trying to clarify the situation, because I was genuinely convinced that the original post was unfairly dismissed as being generated by AI, when that wasn’t the case. I understand that you were actually defending me, and I’m sorry if my response was misinterpreted.

I’m not a regular contributor to the forum either. When I post, it’s usually because I have a suggestion, a problem, or a specific question to address, and—I’ll admit—I sometimes tend to write fairly long messages when I have something to explain, and I translate into French as well because I don’t know if there are any bilingual people here. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: So a long, detailed post doesn’t necessarily mean it was written by an AI.

Also, no one mentioned the metronome, which is barely audible in complex projects.

Anyway, no hard feelings. I just wanted to clear up this misunderstanding, and I appreciate that you tried to defend me.

@Maxence_Rossignol There’s nothing wrong with your list (wishlist?), it’s just the sheer scale of it. I think it would take 20 years to implement all those instruments. And most are available already - I have some! - in Kontakt form or EastWest/SoundIron libraries.
Nothing wrong with wishing. Who knows, maybe Steinberg will grant them.
:+1:

Actually, Padshop is awesome! I created some very good sounding dance tracks with Retrologue too, love them!

Padshop and Retrologue do cover a lot of ground, between them. But HALion can do most of what they do.

Yeah, but Halion is a playback engine, right? Like Kontakt. The content is what matters.
