That may be true. I just don’t think they’re that great as far as tools go (as plugins).
Users may have asked for it and it may have been ‘easy’ enough to implement.
I’m not sure I think they’re that valuable for that purpose in a DAW. Regular meters, BS.1770-x meters, ears and a calibrated monitoring environment suffices… not to mention we can’t clip the channels themselves within a modern DAW (which leaves just the plugins).
Let me put it like this: I’ve worked in post for a couple of decades now and while I’ve always used VU meters on analog gear (i.e. mic pres mainly) I’ve never relied on them within the DAW, ever. And gain-staging in post is just as important as in music production.
