Surround Monitoring

I have now got Cubase 14 pro fully working in my new desktop. I have Realtek speakers 5.1 and I have set the Realtek remote settings to 5.1 and the speakers are working. A DVD played on the computer produces 5.1 surround. If I select “Realtek” as the driver in Studio Setup and set up a surround performance on Cubase, I get no playback. The audio plays back just fine when I use my Yamaha ASIO driver. The mixer is all set correctly and the outputs are all set properly (panners etc.)In “Audio connections”, only left and right are available. Am I doing something wrong or are some audio cards just not compatible with Cubase? Thanks.

Usually, you need an audio interface with an ASIO driver for Cubase, which your internal Realtek doesn’t offer. Else, you can use the Steinberg built-in ASIO driver, which works with every Windows sound device, but I am not sure whether that works with more than 2 channels.
You might want to post screen shots of your Studio setup, the Audio system section and the ports display below that.

Indeed - I was going to ask something similar and see if the Realtek drivers actually exposed distinct “surround” output channels or if it only supports internal rendering (which I’ve seen, though it’s been a long time I’ve used Windows for audio).

Well, what do you know? I switched to the Steinberg ASIO driver and it all works! The sound quality is poor but adequate for monitoring. I got no sound at all from the Realtek driver. I am using a bit of a strange setup from the past. I have a Yamaha 01/X and drivers do not exist since Windows XP. I have a computer guru who has got it working in Windows 11 (with hardly any messing about when you want to use it) and I have Surcode dts software. If you are not familiar, what you do is create your 5.1 mix and then export the six mixdown tracks as files. You then put these through the encoder and an audio file is generated, This is then written to a CD ROM and when you put it in a dts equipped DVD player, it is interpreted as a dts 5.1 soundtrack. All I need is a rough monitor. It looks like the Realtek driver just doesn’t interface with Cubase. Thanks for getting back so quickly! JW
