Switching between parts

I can’t switch to the next part during playback, and I understand that this is done on purpose. During a concert, there may be a need to make quick corrections. For example, if a drummer makes a mistake and loses the metronome, the entire band may start playing with him. In this case, it would be necessary to shift the entire show to the next part, but it would be impossible to stop the entire show due to the context. Is it possible to make checkbox in the settings to choose how to switch between parts during playback with or without stopping the playback?

You can switch Parts within a Song at any time. With FlexLoops active, the switch is delayed until the assigned action (bar/beat quantize, or Part End). Else it is carried out immediately if it has no Part Trigger time set, else it will refuse to jump the show.

Activate FlexLoops to the shortest quantize time if you want to use it during rehearsal, or set no Part Trigger time, which basically makes Parts Preset switches that can be activated at any time.

You can not switch to a different Song while transport is running.

Yes, that’s how it works, but…

I need to jump to exactly the right moment when the music is coming to a certain place. Flex Loop does not allow you to do this. Each part, of course, has its start time from the beginning of the song. I’m not talking about a regular situation, but about the fact that there was a failure during execution and I need to synchronize at a certain point, there is no time and hands to turn off the start of batches and roll the mouse around the table.

So I’m doing it, but in a bad way. I stop the playback, manually switch to the next part, and start it at the right time, but then I lose a piece of the part while the program is stopped. Maybe Flex Loop should add the ability to transition without quantization?

You can click in the timeline, also immediate jump to both locators (Marker 1 and 2) are supported. We’ll check for “immediate” option for FlexLoops, although imho with FlexLoops set to 1/2 bar, that’s close to immediate, and smoother.

Hi! Checked Ableton and Apple GarageBand and seems both waits BAR end.

Well!

… Ableton and Apple GarageBand are DAW but VL is not DAW isn’it?
VL must be better than Ableton!

I’m not talking about an error in the program, but about another line in the menu. If there are situations where this might be necessary, then why not add “immediately” to the quantization options?

MyUser reply here - based on “why not”, every single user could write together a list with over 1k “why not’s”

How would VL be better to do something that an especially pattern/keypad based app like AbletonLive can’t do (because who would break dancing-party with fire next pattern off-beat?

You’re right, but what I’m writing here is based on real-life situations, not just something that came to my mind. Music is more than just dancing. In my band, the drummer has an intro with a complex rhythm, and sometimes he gets off track, and we haven’t been able to fix it yet, even though everything was recorded cleanly in the studio. So, if he misses the next beat, the band easily picks up the rhythm, and I start chasing the beginning of the next section. The reason I don’t work with Ableton is because it’s primarily designed for playing patterns in dance music, and we have a different genre. If the entire show is played on a computer, the quantization transition makes sense, but if the live musicians are not connected to a computer and play a pattern that is slightly more complex than 4/4, there are additional situations where the transition needs to be precise.

That seems a case of: learn to stay on click or simplify the drum fill :winking_face_with_tongue:
