Switching page setup to landscape when layouting scores in Cubase 12 Pro always crashes Cubase

Hi all,

I believe the title says it all. I was trying to start layouting a score, for which I wanted to switch the page to landscape mode as is usual for Big Band. But… well, it always crashes immediately. Changing the size while remaining in portrait is no issue.

Now, I tried to find the minimal situation still causing the issue. So I created a new project. Added a midi track. Added an empty bar. Entered scoring. Tried to switch to landscape mode… Tada - crash!

Do you have any idea what might cause this? I’m on a weak, oldish laptop at the moment but have no vst plugins nothing loaded in cubase for just that reason. I’m only trying to layout. (Windows 11, i5, 1.6 GHz 8GB RAM)

Thanks a lot!

Addendum: Just going a little crazy with ideas I have found the following. If I:

  • Ignore the page setup
  • Directly go to print instead
  • Switch print to landscape
  • Print to pdf
  • Then go to page setup
  • Switch to landscape
  • It works without a crash! :o

Through that I also could confirm that once I am in landscape I can also crash it by trying to switch back to portrait again. Above approach to switch back appears to work too.

ps. Is my realization that there is only one page setup for all layouts true? If so, is there a feature request open somewhere that one can have a specifc one dependent on layout? Appears like an easy, obvious feature.

This is no help, I know, but I was unable to crash Cubase doing this. I used the Brass Band layout template, switched back and forth twixt portrait and landscape, zoomed in and out, etc.
Maybe it just needs a more butch cpu? (My pc seems to be average, going by some of the signatures here!)

It could be related to various things…

Have you ruled out a problem with that project? By creating a new project, adding a track and a midi part, the trying to print that from Page View in the Score Editor?

Thank you! It might not be perfectly helpful but it is reassuring to know that it should work in principle. I do have some hope that on my more beefy audio computer at home it’ll look different. Though off course, I had hoped to get most of the layouting done on the road. And the fact that I can get it to landscape and back with the hacky detour through a print suggests that the CPU should be fine.

Hi and thanks for helping!

As mentioned in my post I had tried just that with the same result.

It sounds like you have a good picture of various options for possible reasons. Is my second post about the detour via printing a hint to you?
