So I’ve been toying around with project sync settings and can not understand what the colors of the little = sign (sync visibility of project) button are supposed to mean. I have seemingly figured out finally how to trigger each of the colors though.
If any of the tabs in the left zone are clicked, even the tab that is already currently selected in the Project Window (must be a different tab in MixConsole Window), the icon goes from white to black. It also turns white, and stays white, by simply hovering over it. Re-hovering doesn’t make it go black again. Additionally, the icon turns from white to orange when clicked on directly, which shows the sync options in a drop down box. Once the mouse is click again, whether it be on one of the options or anywhere else on the screen, this orange circle goes white again.
I have no idea what any of these colors are intended to indicate but it would be nice if they actually indicated that the Project Window was in sync with the MixConsole Window but that does not seem to be the case. The only way to see if the PW and MCW are in sync seem to be by actually clicking on this little icon and checking for the ✓ mark in the list. Am I missing something or maybe simply misinterpreting something?
Thanks
So I’m guessing because this post has been seen by nearly 30 people now without any comments/suggestions that this is just a bug in the UI.
Would be nice if Steinberg moderators could confirm.
Thanks again
There are five different sync options under that UI control, and you can select any or all of them to be active. I’m not sure having a color to indicate that some of them are active would be helpful. It’s a feature that you generally “set and forget.”
It’s easy to tell if a sync is active if you’ve got the MixConsole and the project window visible when you’re making changes to visibility.
I don’t know. I guess it turns white and pops-up a tooltip on mouseover to show that there’s something there. A new user might otherwise not even notice the feature, as the icon is just “=”. It turns orange when you’re editing the selections–it wouldn’t make any difference to the user if it didn’t. It stays black when it’s not been moused-over because–why not?
It’s a valid observation for sure–but maybe there aren’t any comments about it because the feature actually works fine, and petitioning Steinberg to dedicate resources to changing that behavior is a much lower priority for most users than asking them to fix actual bugs.
@XLColdJ Genuinely appreciate the reply. And yeah, fair points all around. I get that showing the state of five different independent sync toggles in one icon isn’t really feasible, and for most people this probably is a set-it-once thing.
For me though, the actual goal was being able to quickly flip MixConsole/Project Window sync on and off for use with a third-party app (MetaGrid). I wanted to select tracks for the MixConsole independently of Project Window selection sometimes. For this, it would have been handy to know what the current sync status is because, although a toggle command for it exists, there is know way of know what the status is before you start pushing buttons. Think I’ve actually got a workaround sorted for that already, though.
And yes, I know there are the MixConsole Configurations that I can and do set up, then turn off sync, and that is probably the most logical way to work but this also seems like it could be a handy option to have from time to time.
And you’re right that I was only thinking about the one sync state I personally cared about. As of right now I only really use one MixConsole but there are several others, and displaying all of that cleanly would be genuinely tricky, maybe not impossible, but I get why it’s low priority compared to actual bugs.
On a side note, this would be mostly solved if Steinberg added independent ON and OFF commands in addition to the TOGGLE commands that already exist.
Thanks again for the reply
