System.mon

Hello,
In WL 12, a folder named " system.mon" is automatically created next to al my montages.
Is it useful for me ?
If not, can it be hided or created elsewhere as was the “companion files” folder please ?
Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

i second this request

The system folder was added to organize some newer files that are now needed for WaveLab 12 such as the _anc file, and also allows for the .gpk file(s) to be stored in a path relative to the montage which helps prevent it from needing to be redrawn if the location of the project or montage moves.

So yes, it is useful as it hides a potential minor mess of misc files.

As for how to hide it or prevent it from being needed, I don’t have an answer but I can say it’s better than what the alternative was.

i just delete that folder as soon as it’s created… is this a bad thing?

Impossible to answer without knowing more about how you’re working and what files are in there when you delete.

If anything, it could slow things down and lose some less important montage related settings. Nothing critical to your work, but some ancillary related things.

Could this be why that AUDIO MONTAGE thing keeps popping back up in your render path?

PG will know more but in many case, the system folder is there to store the _anc file(s) and .gpk file(s), all of which help WaveLab work faster.

Thank you for all your answers.

I suppose it’s the way it is for a good reason. But it’s just a shame to clutter up the tree structure with folders and files, which can be numerous.

If I had to keep the info somewhere, I’d have liked it to be possible to incorporate it into the .mon file.

But I’m just a user :tipping_hand_man:

Depending on what you’re specifically trying to do, PG or others might have some suggestions of how to clean things up but for me, the extra system folder is pretty invisible to me and I’d rather the extra needed files go in there and forget about them than have to see them alongside the WAV files and/or .mon files like before.

i’m on my 3rd job/montage since i started using WL12 fully… and haven’t noticed any issues yet…

if one went back and looked at all my reports and complaints about WL they tend to be about WL forcing file structures, file placements, destinations, etc  so i’m prob more sensitive to this stuff (workflow disruptions, in my case) than most…

i’ll try keeping the folder there and see how much it bothers me

This folder contains a number of settings, in various files. This can be image files, the last zoom and scroll positions, some cache files to accelerate processing, etc.
If you erase it, you will not lose audio data, but it will be recreated always. I don’t recommend doing this. In short, this folder stores data to improve speed and have better montage edit sessions.
