System text is too high off the staff, How do I adjust?

I am a former Finale user and still a novice with Dorico. Additionally, I am new to this forum, and forums in general so I apologize in advance for both my ignorance in Dorico and forum etiquette.

I am working on a big band arrangement and just learned how to enter text into the score and have text reflected on all parts via the, Shift+Alt+X function.

My question is, what is the global setting/function needed to adjust the distance of the text to the top of the staff. Currently upon my entering the text, the text (i.e. sax soli) is too far away from the uppermost line of the staff. I need to find the setting or function that automatically brings it down closer to the staff, for all parts globally, as opposed to having to edit and adjust each part individually. The issue can be seen in the attached PDF. The text, “open for solos” and “sax soli,” are set to high above the staff.

Thank you in advance,

Welcome to the forum, @Burt_Gutierrez!

The best thing you can do to help us help you is upload a minimal project with this problem. An empty one is fine as long as if we create the text, it appears too high etc.

However, a good place to start would be in the Edit Paragraph Styles dialog. Specifically, the Distance from staff property:

In Engraving Options > Text > Vertical Position, there is a setting for Minimum distance from protruding items. The default setting is 1/2 space. Try changing the value to see if that helps.

Another thing to check for is that you haven’t inadvertently added linefeeds (Return/Enter) after the actual text.

Also, with the text selected in Engrave mode, look in Properties > Text > Per-staff offset. Changing the Y value will alter the vertical position.

The mistake I made at first is leaving the system text input with the “Enter” key. Pressing “Enter” adds a line break and the text is jumping up to make space for the new created empty line. Leaving the system text input with “Esc” avoids it.

Or Ctrl/Cmd+Enter.

That’s great info. That never would’ve occurred to me. I know that each time I have used this function, I have used the enter key to complete the action.
Many thanks!

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I am new to the forum (any forum for that matter) and don’t yet understand the proper way to frame a question or how to ask for help regarding a particular issue. But I received multiple replies and suggestions in a very timely manner. I am confident the solution is in one or more of the responses.

thanks again.

thank you for the prompt response to my question. I will try those options.
