Tacets

Hello. I’m creating scores, and TACET seems to work only sometimes. I don’t see any variation in how I created anything, but sometimes TACET works, and sometimes is doesn’t. What am I missing?

Can you say more about what you’re doing? Do you want parts to show tacet if they have no more notes in the flow? Do you want parts to show tacet when they don’t play at all in a flow? (Tacets don’t normally show in score layouts.)

I want to be able to print a score with the word TACET on the songs that the players have no music. It’s a musical, so having a blank page with the word TACET is safer than not printing a page and having the band start the wrong song at the wrong time. It’s working sometimes but not always. Not sure why that’s happening.

In order for a layout to show TACET for a flow, none of the players in that layout can be assigned to that flow. (Note that it’s not just that they don’t have any notes in the flow – they can’t be assigned to it at all.)

In this horn quartet project, I have selected the Horn 1 player (it’s bright blue), and you can see that it’s not assigned to Flow 2 (flow box not checked).

So the Horn 1 layout will show TACET for Flow 2.

You say “score” in your post. If you really want the score layout to show TACET, then none of the players can be assigned to the flow. Here I’ve selected Flow 2 (bright blue), and you can see that it has no players assigned to it (no players boxes checked).

Now the score will show TACET for Flow 2.

If you have a project file that doesn’t seem to be behaving this way, can you upload it here, so someone can take a look?

Hi again. I’m sure I’m using the wrong terminology. Mea culpa…

When I uncheck the flow box, the word TACET only sometimes appears. The notes all go away, but the word “tacet” doesn’t always show up. I’m sure I’ve got some setting wrong… I just don’t know what it is. Here’s an example file:

05 Hold On.dorico (2.2 MB)

The BASS layout is blank except for header info, but the word “TACET” is missing. I have to add it manually…which adds up over dozens of cues and multiple players.

You can only see the TACET in PAGE VIEW (not Galley/Fill View)

Correct. It’s not consistently showing in PAGE VIEW or in PRINT.

What do mean by “not consistently showing”? In the file you posted, I see the tacet whenever I switch to Page view (or Engrave or Print mode). Do you have a set of steps to make the tacet not show, or a different file that doesn’t show tacet?

Sorry for the confusion. I wrote that “TACET” by using the text tool. It didn’t appear automatically, which is what I’m hoping for.

If you remove the page override that you have created (the red triangle on the pages panel - right-click> remove page override), you will see the TACET appear. It is identified as a Tacet Flow object in the status bar…

I see the Tacet Flow object just by opening the file, don’t need to remove the page override.

I deleted the Bass and Drum layouts and re-created them. Problem solved. At least for now. Thank you, everyone!
