Tempo and Octave Issue

Hello Dorico Friends

I’m afraid I’m back to an old issue I’ve had with my scores, and going back to my previous posts - with your wise solutions - hasn’t fixed it this time out.

So yesterday I was working on my score, and everything was playing back fine. But today - for reasons I cannot determine - it’s not playing back at the correct tempo (it’s very slow) and the playback sounds are not in the correct octaves. The whole thing sounds dosed in molasses.

I’ll admit I still don’t understand the Dorico logic around the blue tempo marking - as best I can tell, I have everything set to 84 (which is what I want), but it’s not playing back at that tempo. And when I click the blue tempo marking on and off it doesn’t change anything. And maybe it’s bypassing the sound library or something so that it’s reading everything down an octave? I really didn’t change anything between yesterday and today, so I’m flummoxed yet again.

I’ve attached the file.

Thanks as always for your help.

If the blue tempo is OFF

Dorico will play everything at the tempo set in that control (E.g. 120 in this case.)

If the blue tempo is ON:

Dorico will playback using tempo marks in the score.

The best advice I can give you is: Make sure the tempo is ON (Blue), and then DON’T EVER TOUCH IT AGAIN.

Set the tempo by adding tempo marks to the score.

Also: your third instrument has an Expression Map set to transpose up an octave. That might be correct for an Accoustic Bass, but it’s probably best to re-apply the Playback Template, as you’ve got loads of other instruments loaded.

Thanks, but I’m afraid that’s not doing the trick. I’ve got it set to 84 in blue, 84 tempo marking in the score, and it’s still playing back very slowly, no where near 84.

As for the instruments, this is the part of Dorico that I find most confusing. I only want three instruments, and don’t know what you mean about “other instruments loaded”. Is there a way I can delete those?

Your document works fine here, so it must be an application (or wider) issue. Trying quitting Dorico and restarting.

If you open up the HALion plug-in window (click the little ‘e’ icon), you’ll see all the sample instruments that have been loaded.

Re-apply the Playback template, to build the necessary instruments again.

Thanks again - I’m going to have to bracket the instrument question for now, as the playback tempo is still not working. I’ve quit everything else, started and restarted my computer three times, and it’s still playing back very slow with everything an octave down. This file is clearly bypassing all of the settings for some reasons. I’ve got no other applications open on my computer save my browser.

I’m so grateful for the help here, but I must be missing something simple and fundamental that is making the most basic playback not work. I’ve reattached the file just in case I’ve missed something.

Thanks again, I’m sure this is a user error but it’s still driving me out of my mind.

This is what I hear.

You could try uploading a Diagnostic Report (from the Help menu), which may contain more information about the state of your setup and what is happening.

My goodness, that’s what I’m trying to hear! I mean, I wanted a clarinet in the top voice, but that’s an easy problem to solve. When I export it as an audio file, it’s playing back correctly, sounding just like your MP3. But within Dorico it sounds like the attached. Clearly something is misfiring in the app somewhere. Very strange.

If you upload a report, perhaps @Ulf, the audio specialist, can help.

Ok, Ulf got me sorted, though how this happened remains a mystery. The problem was a discrepancy with the sample rate in the Audio Device Setup. How this error crept in is unclear - I definitely didn’t go tinkering in those settings, and never would have spotted that problem on my own - but may have something to do with my DAW and audio interface. Whatever the cause, a sample rate discrepancy would result in the pitch and tempo changes, which is exactly what happened, and explains why @benwiggy played back my file without any issue. So it’s back to working now, and I know where to look the next time this happens.

Thanks everyone for the help on this very strange problem. The Dorico community always comes through.

Usually sample rate changes between 44.1 and 48 Hz change pitch by a semitone! An octave must have been a large difference!
