I’m trying to get my 80 BPM tempo in 4/4 time signature to count in 8th note subdivisions. I’m switching the “Use custom Time-signature” to 1/8 and it doesn’t seem to make any difference at all. Is there an easy way to simply get the metronome to count in 8ths, 17th, whole note? I would think this should be a very simple selection to make? I’m using Cubase 10

Go to Metronome Setup
Click Patterns
4-4

Opps sorry got that a bit wrong. 
The above location is where you can see all the existing click patters, add new ones & remove existing patterns. But it is NOT where you select the pattern.
You can select the pattern 2 buttons to the right of where you activate the metronome.
The 4/4 default looks like: — _ _ _
Click there and change the pattern in the drop down menu on the right
