Hello. When entering text via the ‘shift-x’ command and popup, after entering the text and clicking outside, the cursor becomes a selection: moving it resizes a selection rectangle. So, Dorico changes automatically to selection mode after exiting the text box popup. Anyone has this problem? Thanks in advance.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Clicking on an item in the score while a popover (including the Shift+X text popover) is active will always result in selecting that item (likewise clicking+dragging will always result in a marquee select). Basically, Dorico is always in “selection mode”.
I’m making some assumptions here, but if you’re looking at the Select tool in the left toolbox and expect that you can’t select anything when that tool is inactive (which is a reasonable expectation given the name of the tool), that is actually not what that tool does. You can always select items with your mouse whether that tool is active or not. What that tool actually does is enable or disable note input by mouse.
(Simpy calling that tool “mouse input” or something along those lines would better convey what that button actually does IMHO).
If my guess is wrong then please tell us a bit more about what you’re experiencing.
I recommend ending the text entry with the Esc key rather than clicking. Then you won’t accidentally select something.
Or Ctrl/Cmd+Return.
Thanks. As I described, just clicking once outside the text box popup, on a free space, activates a selection rectangle (not holding down the mouse). It’s as if a selection box becomes sticky, with no mouse click: just moving the cursor. So I guess it is a bug.
It seems that this only happens while using ‘tap to click’ in MacOS.

It is one of the first things I had to learn in Dorico: the Shift-X text popover has to be left/exited with the Escape key.
Today, ten years later, I have learnt that there is a second option leaving the Shift-X text popover: Cmd-Return. Thank you, Aaron.
The tap-to-click to exit the text popover is a severe #bug
Sometimes it activates note input and escape can’t exit that! It becomes sticky…
For now, the best way to close the text editor window appears to be using the escape key (instead of tapping outside). This way you can avoid the described situation.
I’d like to encourage you to check the exact steps. Shift-X is done by using the computer keyboard. Entering text is also done by using the keyboard. Finalising (=leaving the editor window) with another key (escape) on your keyboard seems to be the most efficient way.
In contrary, leaving by tapping outside the editor window means, you would have to aim
“catch” the cursor, shift your finger and aim at an empty place on the score and do the tap. It seems not to be the most efficient way to escape the window.
Nevertheless thank you very much, it is good that you described what can happen by using the single tap action on Apple’s trackpad. Did this by any chance appear with an upgrade to macOS Tahoe?
