Text spacing in PDFs

Dorico 6 on a Mac. I have a client that uses a custom text font. On screen in Dorico it looks fine. On exported PDFs the character spacing is wonky, particularly the E and the O. It comes out correct in exported PNG or TIFF. I can also edit the PDF in Acrobat, delete and re-enter the text and it looks right. This is an old font and could use some updating under the hood, but I don’t think it should look ok everywhere but PDFs. Ideas?

Are you exporting your PDFs using Dorico’s built-in export (i.e. the options on the right-hand side of Print mode), or are you using a third-party PDF exporter like Adobe Acrobat? If you’re not using the built-in export, do you get the expected results if you do?

Actually, that’s quite common with old non-Unicode fonts, as they have to be re-encoded in the PDF data.

Thanks for the input. And would you say that you can see this just in Dorico and not in any other places the font has been used? I’m sure each programs handles fonts differently.

I exported with Dorico’s export and by accessing the system print option through Dorico. Same result wither way.

It will depend on the PDF-generation engine that the app uses. Most of the time, on a Mac, that will be the OS, but graphics and DTP apps will usually use their own.

It’s a possibility for the cause; but there are others.

Thanks for the input

Hi Sean,

If the font is an OpenType font, a TrueType version is likely to resolve the issue.
