One thing I’ve noticed with Halion 7 is how expensive it is and how limiting it is. I can understand Halion Sonic, but not Halion 7. If I purchase, for instance, Fantasy Vocals, I should be able to access the zone and adjust the envelope to the awful pops and clicks I get if I adjust the start position of the waveform. Steinberg should find a way to just lock the sample itself ( although there is always a way around this). I can’t even modulate anything within Halion because I do not have access to a mod matrix because it is also locked. I might as well be using the free version of Halion. Steinberg should let their customers know this before hand, but I am learning what Steinberg is all about.
You probably have to differentiate between HALion 7 and the instruments you can buy like Fantasy Vocals. What exactly is locked or not is pretty much up to the developer of each instrument as far as I know. Also, you don’t need a HALion 7 license to run these instruments. That license is meant primarily if you want to create instruments/sounds on your own.
Not the fault of HALion (Which I use often…excellent instrument for my needs), but this is precisely why I passed on expensive libraries like full Iconica. As provided, they have ‘issues for my needs’ I could fix in 90 seconds with HALion, if they weren’t locked down jelly tight.
To be fair, it’s not just instruments for the HALion platform that get locked down. This also happens with stuff for Kontakt, and other expensive libraries out there even have their own closed ‘platform/engine’ that is very locked down. You take and use libraries as they come and that’s it. I pass on those as well.
HALion itself is far from being ‘limiting’. Heck, even if one is working merely with the base Sonic Selection content, in the free Sonic player, it’s one of the most versatile and powerful platforms on the planet.
“We’ve reached out to Steinberg since we’ve had contact and discussed how we could provide a fix for the mentioned issue.
Since the release of the Lyrical Phrases Steinberg changed their encoding and the port from this previous version to the new encoding will be difficult. There is of course a way, but so far I unfortunately can’t predict, when the fix will be available. You don’t have the full version of Kontakt to use the libraries there until this is fixed, right?”
