The Frustration of Trying to Play EZDrummer 3 Brush Snare in a Dorico 6 Player

Despite enjoying my 4 month journey into Dorico, the frustration of trying to play EZDr 3 jazz grooves (especially brush swirl/slap) in Dorico 6 Pro remains.

I’ve downloaded the existing percussion maps with thanks from this forum, but they’re not complete. Dragging a jazz brush groove into a Dorico player with the map assigned plays back almost identical to playing it in EZdrummer except for the Brush Half Circle.

The map downloaded from here has the Brush Half Circle assigned to MIDI note 69 but it needs to be on note 39, which is empty. So I added the name and instrument to note 39 but got stuck at assigning the Technique. Note 69 has pt.user.brush_short_drag assigned (see attached) which is nowhere to be found in my Library > Playback Techniques. (neither are the other 3 you can see on the attachment). I know that I can create new techniques for this but how? The other 3 techniques seem to be working (at least 66 Short Drag is) but are not in my Playback Techniques list.

What’s the next step? Or is this brush-snare drumming still as difficult to manage as many say?

Did the percussion map not come with a Dorico document or .doricolib file contain these user-created techniques? You’ll need these as well.

You can create new Playback Techniques from the Library menu. (Note the difference between PlayING techniques and PlayBACK techniques!) Playback Techniques can then be used in Expression Maps and Percussion Maps; and you can also create PlayING techniques – symbols in the score – which trigger the PlayBACK tech.

Thanks for your reply benwiggy and pointing out the difference between Playing and Playback Techniques which is still a bit of a learning curve for me.

After searching my computer, the internet and this forum for those 4 techniques I found no existence of them. So why are they appearing in the percussion map I downloaded off this forum assigned to MIDI notes 66 to 69 but when I try to create a new copy of note 69 under note 39 to activate the half circle technique they don’t exist in either the Playing or Playback library. Strange!

I know that I can play the brush groove from EZDr 3 by activating “Follow Host” but it would be nice if loading it into a Dorico player wouldn’t be such a confusing and complicating affair. I don’t even care what the drum part looks like as I use that player just to make the rhythm playback a bit more human and not for a drum part.

Hey George, can you upload a link to the map that you downloaded?

This is the forum post that talks about this at length:

Scroll down a bit, there are zip files by Paul Walmsley and also tcreverb. I also found one by a women which I’m talking about in this post. None of them are 100% complete, especially when it comes to snare brush/swirl play.

I think @FredGUnn made a percussion map for EZDrummer 3.

Did I? I don’t seem to even have it installed anymore if I did. I might have messed around but never completed it. @MarcLarcher’s Superior Drummer maps are probably close so would be a good starting point.

Sorry, Todd, I might be remembering wrong.

Thanks to all you creators of EZDr 3 maps, they’re a great start-up help but the issue is not with the maps which are all (as you admit) incomplete. The problem is with all aspects of swing jazz brush on snare grooves created by the EZD3 drummers. To get those intricate swirls and circles separated and attached to MIDI notes must be really difficult. The one that is not behaving properly for me is note 69 which should be on note 39. To create this, the missing link is pt.user.brush_half_circle. It appears in the map, as you can see in my attachment but is not actually in the techniques library.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding all this as I’m only a few weeks into Dorico and percussion maps etc are not totally clear in my head. Thankfully I have time and I’m basically just messing about with creating more human playback.
