The last two times I've started Dorico 5.1.21.2098 I get a warning popup

The last two times I’ve started Dorico 5.1.21.2098 I get a warning popup which says “An essential component for Dorico Playback is missing.” and instructs me to insall Halion Sonic SE - 3 Content. When I open the Steinberg Download Assistant I see no entry for that, unless it’s Halion Sonic Selection - Content, in which case it shows me a green checkbox and an option to “Install Again.” That indicates to me that the Download Assistant knows I already have it installed. Why doesn’t Dorico know that? When I run the Halion Sonic SE standalone app it works fine and there’s no warning about missing content.
The warning box does have a “Don’t Show Again” checkbox, so it’s no big deal but I’m curious as to why it’s appearing.

Turn it the other way round. The Download Assistant thinks it did install the sounds but does not know that something went wrong.
Dorico on the other hand checks on startup the contents files that should be there and finds some of them not to be around, therefore the warning.
So it would be good if indeed you push the Install Again button for the Selection package in the Download Assistant.

I did the “install again” thing for Halion SE - Content and started Dorico. Same error message. I rebooted the computer and then started Dorico. Same message. Then I used “install again” for the other two entries which mention Halion and then restarted Dorico - same error message. I just started Dorico on my laptop computer (same version of Dorico, Windows11) and did not get the error message there. It just appears on my Windows10 desktop computer. One curious thing is that when I run Halion Sonic standalone there’s no such warning message and when I run Halion Sonic SE3 standalone there’s no such error message, so obviously some of Steinberg’s software realizes the content is loaded.
When I just went to the “Playback Template” dialog there is no entry for Halion – probably because Dorico can’t find the content.
I usually use NotePerformer so I hadn’t noticed any lack of Halion playback templates until just now, but this whole error message thing is a very recent development on this computer.
Using Steinberg Download Assistant I have scanned down to the entries for Halion outside of the Dorico entries and made sure that everything (including sounds!) is installed. I have re-installed them. Starting Dorico gives me the same error message and there’s no Halion playback template in the list.
I’m at my wit’s end – but as I say I mostly use NotePerformer so it’s not crippling my notation efforts. Still since it’s part of the package and I might want to use the Halion playback template and sounds at some point I’d love to resolve this issue.
Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Please do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here. That will allow us to see exactly what is being complained about.

Here’s the diagnostic report – thank you for your help!

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (413.7 KB)

Please use Windows Explorer to go to this location:

C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound

You should see 32 files in this folder, and specifically the following files should be present:

FCP_SMT_077_HSSE_Pro_Instrument_Presets_01.vstsound FCP_SMT_080_HSSE_Pro_Presets.vstsound FCP_SMT_084_HSSE_S90_Presets.vstsound FCP_SMT_086_HSSE_SR_OneSoundzSilver_Presets.vstsound FCP_SMT_088_HSSE_VST_Expression_Presets.vstsound FCP_SMT_091_HSSE_Pro_Synth_Presets_01.vstsound FCP_SMT_101_HSSE_Artist_Instrument_Presets_02.vstsound FCP_SMT_121_HSSE_Artist_Instrument_Presets_03.vstsound

Can you verify that those files are among the ones in that location?

And could you also please run the here attached batch file.
CreateVAEDiagnosticsReport.bat.zip (817 Bytes)
After unzipping just double click the batch file, after a few seconds on your desktop a VAEDiagnosticsReport.zip shall appear.
Please post that one here as well. Thanks

Daniel, yes, all those files are present . I have 61 files there – some start with ADD_SMT, some start with FCP_SMT, and there is one called Drum Loop Expansion 01.vstsound, three start with Groove Agent ONE, and one starts with SequelContent000 I have 50 files which start with FCP_SMT, with none of them duplicate filenames with (1) or (2) following them, each appears to be a unique file.

Ulf, that didn’t work – I unzipped the zip file and there was only one file in it. I’m attaching a screenshot of the end of the results of running that .bat file. There was no resulting .zip file written to my desktop.
screen shot of results of VAEDiagnosticsReport.bat.pdf (48.1 KB)

Oh, permission denied error. Can you please run the batch with admin rights? Do a right click on that batch file and from the pop-up menu choose Run as Administrator.

I right clicked, chose “Run as Administrator” and got the same result – no zip file on the desktop and the same “permission denied” error in reference to _zipIt.vbs(4,1) as when I ran it the first time. When I look in windows\system32 there is no _zipIT.vbs file on my computer. That could explain the problem. I’m on Windows10Pro, 64 bit.

This file is not in the System32 directory, it is stored in the Tempdir directory. This is created on start of the script and deleted at the end. So you won’t find it after it is done.

Can you please try to rename your directory “Dorico 5” to something like “Dorico_5”, just to avoid any trouble that might be caused by the space in the name.

For testing purposes, can you please open the .bat file in a text editor and change the first line to “ECHO ON” and then run it. This will cause tons of text scrolling through the command line, but at the end it might show the line that causes the “permission denied” error.

I’ve simplified my batch-script, please try to run (after unzipping)
CreateVAEDiagnosticsReportFolder.zip (548 Bytes)

Instead of a zip file it will just create a folder VAETempInfo on your Desktop with some files inside.
That one please zip up and send me.

Thank you for trying – the result is a folder labeled “Bailey\Desktop” but it remains empty. When I run the .bat file (as an administrator) after copying it to my C: drive the result is the same. I just ran it again not as an administrator and got the folder C:\Bailey\Desktop\VAETempInfo but it remains empty.
Running the .bat file, there is a whole slew of “The System Cannot Find The Path Specified” lines before it claims to have written the VAEDiagnosticsReportFolder to my desktop yet no such folder actually appears on my desktop.
I have looked at the .bat file and see all the paths you specify for INPUTDIR1 through INPUTDIR5 and the all exist on my C:\ drive.
I have even run the “Install Again” for the Dorico 5 program from the Steinberg Download Assistant and nothing has changed.
Thank you for spending all this time on my problem. It’s very curious that on my Windows11 laptop everything is fine.

I’m loathe to be an extra cook in the kitchen spoiling the broth, but what is the name of your home folder in C:\Users? In the Dorico application.log files in your previous diagnostics, it appears as:

C:/Users/DAVIDH~1.BAI/

but I guess this isn’t how its name appears in Windows Explorer?

C:\Users\David H. Bailey\

This is an archaic Windows habit, from the times when file and directory names had this 8.3 characters definition. I think the Windows Command Interpreter shortens names with more than eight characters down to something with the tilde and number appendix. But I have seen this only with Win32 app, so it is confusing if this still shows up in Win10.

In the Windows environment it is always visible in any length, supported these days.

my directory is “C:\ProgramFiles\Steinberg\Dorico5” with no space in it at all.

I’ll try editing the .bat file to include echo on and see what happens.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Running the .bat file with Echo ON gives many path not found lines.
This is a copy/paste of just one of them:
C:\Users\David H. Bailey>dir /S /Q /N “C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST2” 1>“C:\Users\David H. Bailey\Desktop\VAETempInfo\VST2.txt”
The system cannot find the path specified.

Ah ok, I think I know where the culprit is, @dspreadbury had the right hint and the full length userprofile directory also shows it.

CreateVAEDiagnosticsReport.zip (815 Bytes)

I have modified the script from @Ulf a little bit and added some double quotes around the %UserProfile% settings, because your home directory contains a space and I guess this will be cut in the script down to C:\Users\David leaving out the rest.

Please try this to see if it now creates the report zip file on your desktop.
