The order of my layouts in Setup in the Layouts panel keeps getting changed. Yesterday I spent a good amount of time moving them back into the order I want and now, after doing a save-as on the project, they are all mixed up again. I have created a layout for each flow (30 in total) and they are named “Full score AxSyz Name of song”, where x is the Act number (1 or 2), y is the Scene number, and z is blank, a, b, or c (blank if there is only one song in the scene, a for the first song in the scene, b for the second song in the scene and c for the third song in the scene). The reordering done by Dorico makes no sense. It’s not alphabetical. It’s not in the order they were added. There seems to be no rhyme or reason in the order. The first time I saw this was yesterday. Before they had always stayed put where I had dragged them.
Thanks. It’s possible that I clicked the icon and that changed it, but that doesn’t seem right because I have to do a long click to get it to show the two options.
After a little searching, I dragged them back to the order I want, right clicked on one of the layouts and selected “Renumber Layouts” from the popup menu. Hopefully that will keep them in my preferred order.
If you have manually sorted the layouts, they can automatically revert to default order if you add a new player, depending on your settings. There is an interaction between the Sort Layouts setting on the lower right, and the Sort Players setting on the lower left.
If Sort Players is set to Orchestral, Jazz, or Band, and Sort Layouts is set to Instrumental Score Order, the layout order will automatically revert to score order when adding a new player (all without clicking Sort Players or Sort Layouts).
To have the most flexible control over the order of your layouts, I think the combination you want is:

On the desktop I always use a Long-click to disengage automatic sorting (change the sorting to None…).
On the iPad though I am having difficulties to aim properly (I am using my finger, as I lost my Apple pencil and am too greedy to buy a second one). Here is, where the Long- and Short-clicks matter, or the click into the minuscule white triangle to change the sorting to None…
I can’t really predict what is going to happen, it is a sort of try and error (and my fingers are quite slim). There might be room for improvement somehow, I don’t know.
Thanks all. This has improved my understanding. I have been playing with adding a player named “Stage Directions” with an single line staff instrument called “Stage Directions” so as to be able to include stage directions in the conductor’s score and the rehearsal piano/vocal score. Adding and deleting and retrying several times to get it the way I want is probably what triggered the reorder of the layouts.
While I’d rather have “official” Apple products, I bought a generic for about $10 (maybe less, since I am a bit squeaky). I’ve seen offers with multiple pencils for cheap at Amazon and others that might help you zero in!

with greedy I mean really greedy.
Meaning I payed 150 for the Apple Pencil - and lost it. If I now pay another 10 I would have payed 160 - to work with an inferior replacement pencil. That’s too much for a greedy person. I’d rather bit the bullet and get the real thing again.
The thing is, I use my iPad for one singular purpose only: as a cover up Dorico tool, if I am away for a few days only, and someone asks me for a small edit or a transposition. I can do that without the pencil. And I actually remember a constant issue when using the pencil (the onscreen keyboard would turn into a tiny iPhone keyboard and all recommended procedures to get it back to the regular sized one wouldn’t be working). It seems I am actually better off without that thing..
