When using a single voice this works as expected but when I add another voice to my clef, and try to tie the two 8th notes, it just merges them as a quarter note. Is there a way to prevent this behavior? The bottom picture is what I’m trying to achieve.
Have you tried Force Duration (O) before tying them?
That works, but if you want it consistently one way, there is a setting for it:
Notation Options > Note Grouping > Syncopation > Notation of short-long-short patterns that cross the half-bar

That worked for those notes but then it arbitrarily tied the preceding notes. I only had the two notes in question selected.
Thanks for the quick response. Looks like I would have to upgrade from the free version to Elements to be able to do that. I’m open to upgrading but I’m brand new to Dorico and want to see what all my limitations are first.
Yes, unfortunately when you force the middle one you also have to force the first one, according to Dorico’s algorithm (pardon the pun).
Wow, that’s pretty lame. So the Elements version can handle this use case though?
Yes, Elements and Pro have the Notation Options dialog, where you can set note grouping defaults on a per-flow basis.
So I upgraded to Elements and I’m having the same issue…
Scroll down to the Syncopation section and you’ll find a specific option for your purpose.
