Tied notehead change

Can anyone explain this weird behaviour please?

I have a semibreve cymbal roll I want to tie to a crotchet in the next bar. I’ve selected X and Circle X noteheads and input the notes as I need:

When I add the tie the crotchet notehead changes to a small minim ??

In what circumstances would I want a tie to change a notehead?

Under the surface, Dorico treats tied notes as just a single note, with a single set of properties.
To get around this, you have several options:

  • first tie the notes, then switch to Engrave mode and change the individual noteheads
  • put one of the notes in a different voice, then tie them together and get rid of any superfluous rests
  • adjust the notehead set or make a new custom one, corresponding to your top image.

Thanks. Checking and altering the notehead set did it. I’d changed the notehead set because I detest the default noteheads. I remember changing the crotchet notehead but when I checked it was still set as a small circle, so I must have forgotten to Apply or something.

And although Dorico is a brilliant program, the way ties behave causes me endless problems. I would like to add ties as I enter notes, but that prevents adding dynamics, text and articulations to tied notes. I really do think it’s something that needs to be improved.

Thankyou for your help :+1:

The trick to ties is not to use them! Just enter the full duration and Dorico will create the tie for you.

Articulations are also a kind of property of a note, so placing them halfway along a tied note does indeed require some extra work: either use multiple voices or recreate the articulations as custom playing techniques. But you can place just about anything else just about anywhere you want by using the caret.

PS You didn’t address my final question. For a tie to be able to change a notehead is plainly wrong and shouldn’t be possible.

How should I enter semibreve tied to a crotchet?

I do a semibreve then extend it with [edit] shift-alt-arrow.
(this is easier if you have set key commands to change the rhythmic grid…)

Shift+alt/opt+arrow that is.
