Ties and beam problems

I’m having three problems notating a single passage. In the first beat, two 16th notes are tied together when they should be a single 8th note. In the following bar the first two beats are connected with a beam. Finally the last four beats should be a single whole note, which defaults to the quarter note tied to the dotted half note when a tie is applied to it.

For the tied G’s in the first measure, you want Force Duration.

  1. Select the two notes
  2. Press O or click the C-clamp icon
  3. Press 4 (16th note) and then 5 (8th note)

The quickest way to fix the second bar is to change the time signature to [1+1+4]/4. This tells Dorico that you want the note grouping to be 1+1+4. You could also do it with a combination of the Split Beam command and Force Duration on the low C, but in this case the time sig change will be easier.

Thank you. How, then, can I get 6/4 to display instead of 1+1+4/4?

Note the brackets [ ] in the time sig I suggested. That tells Dorico to use those values for beaming/note grouping but to do the math and display 6 in the actual time sig.

Edit: This sort of thing is very common in mixed meters. By default, Dorico assumes that 5/8 and 5/4 are 3+2, so if you want 2+3 you have to enter [2+3]/8.

I see. Thanks very much.
