I’ve been noticing ties at the beginning of systems setting in Engraving Options is not adjusting ties since the update to Dorico 6.2. Has anyone else had this issue?
Same here, yes.
Which option are you referring to? In Dorico 6.2 with macOS Tahoe, Minimum length for ties at the start of the system works correctly.
Strange indeed. It seems like it doesn’t work for a single note, but works for a chord!
yes. that setting
I was also able to reproduce the same issue.
Same here… a regression, perhaps?
This option (now) applies only for single notes when ties are set to appear between noteheads, i.e. when the Tie endpoint positioning for single notes option is set to Between noteheads. (It also applies only for chords where ties are set to appear between noteheads, but that’s the default for chords.)
So a tie to a single note will no longer adjust to that setting at the beginning of the system? If that’s correct, is there a setting that will adjust single note ties at the beginning of the system?
I had a similar experience today. I have not changed the default settings in this area. The tie origins from a chord in the previous bar. The tie at the beginning of the new system looks fine. Now, if I change the voice column index of that chord in the previous bar, the tie extension at the beginning of the new system changes to a squished look.
I just noticed this behaviour and edited that small tie manually.
That’s right: a tie that ends in the middle of the notehead is now not affected by this engraving option. It was always the intention that it should only apply to ties ending to the left of the notehead, as typically the tie ending in the middle of the notehead (either above or below) provides enough space by default, given the usual amount of space at the start of the bar.
Daniel’s explanation of Dorico’s design makes a lot of sense. Perhaps simply considering a change to the option name or the description would be a good idea.
Ok. Thanks for the info.
Is there a minimum length that we can set for ties? I think there’s a setting, but I can’t find it.
None of those seem to create more length at the beginning the system I need. Thanks though.
May we have an option to change to the old behavior? The primary use case for me is that the tie becomes too short if you show accidentals after a system break. These ties end up “ending to the left of the notehead.” Ties under the notehead without accidentals are rarely affected by this option, so the old behavior actually fits the intended behavior better.
Ideally, I would love to have:
Options for the beginning of a system:
- gap before the first note
- minimum tie length
- minimum slur length
- negative horizontal offset for tie start (overlapping the key signature)
- negative horizontal offset for slur start (overlapping the key signature)
Options for the end of a system:
- gap after the last note
- minimum tie length
- minimum slur length
- horizontal offset for tie end (extending past the barline)
- horizontal offset for slur end (extending past the barline)
These are interesting options/suggestions.
May I add one from Amadeus, where the slur did not “thin out” at the end/start but remained its full thickness. I don’t have a sample, but imagine that the slur was cut to a new system where the vertical orange double arrow is in this image. It enhances the “continued” aspect of a slur. I don’t recall it being an option for ties.
I think this was/is an option in SCORE as well, but I’m not 100% sure.
A master engraver can probably comment on it. Amadeus was (mainly) built for UE and Henle to their specifications, so there might be some plate engravings that used this.
