It is almost always quicker to enter an approximate duration and then extend/shorten (shift-alt-right/left) or add more dots (alt-.) to suit than it is to enter component durations and tie-ing.

I have to admit, I think that no matter where one would wish to type 6. one should get a dotted quarter note. That is one thing that I find very annoying about Dorico.

But it’s not difficult to learn to recognize these things. In Leo’s excellent example above, the last note is on the same beat as the long note, and they’re 2 bars apart – voilà.

The other trick I quite often use when transcribing legato lines (from audio) is to just input attacks, then select the passage and use my shortcut for Extend to Next Note.
