Hi, I’m trying to tie an 8th note on and of 4 to a whole note in the next measure. But the whole notes keeps changing to a series of tied notes. I try to force the duration back to a whole note but then the ties disappears, Thanks for any help!
Can you post an image of what it looks like before you try to tie the notes? It’s not very clear to me what your set up is. Whole notes breaking up into smaller tied notes, is indeed unusual.
This is to do with the 8th note at the end of the second bar. Dorico is splitting the tied note at the half bar (as it does by default.)
If you want a tied 8th note-dotted half note-8th note, you’ll need to activate Force Duration before entering the rhythm, using the key command O.
If you want a tied 8th note-whole note and it isn’t appearing by default, try reinputting the music and maybe upload your project here if that doesn’t work.
I just want the 8th note tied to a whole note. Dorico changed my whole note into that series of half note, dotted quarter and eighth.
The final eighth note isn’t tied in your image (which is why I assumed that you wanted it there).

If you have a whole note in the 2nd measure, just select the 8th note and the whole note and type T.
Alternately, from where you are in the image, you can select the tied note and press ALT/OPTION+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW to extend the duration of the tied note which should turn the notes in the 2nd measure into a whole note. (Make sure Insert is off!)
If that doesn’t work, you probably have some notes in there with force duration enabled which will get in the way.
