Tightness and inconsistent playback

The thing that gets changed is the preferences folder. So most likely there was an entry in one of the files of the preferences folder that messed with Cubase. #cubasecripplesitself
You can check that by closing Cubase, renaming the folder (Cubase Artist 13_64) and starting Cubase while holding down the Alt key (Mac: Opt key). Then you can select to start Artist and it will create a factory preference folder.

yep, I had to think about this today when answering the thread… I ran Pro as demo mode, then I purchased a license for Artist 13. Due to a bug the changeover from Pro Demo → Artist 13 screwed up and crashed. I read that the bug was eventually fixed in an update, but the way to fix it at the time was to reset the preferences to defaults. In that much I don’t think the preferences should have then had any adverse effect. ( That issue was related to the fact that I’d used Control Room in the demo version which wasn’t available in Artist ). The next thought is regarding the project files. I don’t know how cubase works internally or what is stored in the project files… but of course my projects are evolutions over these different versions, i.e. I never created fresh projects with Artist because I wanted to continue working on my ideas and each project will evolve from a previous one. The projects files are meant to be compatible and indeed there are no obvious issues with using them across the differing versions. Therefore I did wonder if the issue was related to something in the project files causing a problem with the Artist version… which then resolved itself when returning to the Pro version… just speculation.

Never heard that before, so from my point of view it is rather unlikely. Preferences - now that happens far too often.

Thanks, I already have pro, so… luckily I havent had the issue so much lately, maybe it helped because I upgraded to 14:)
