Hi everybody,
In latin music it happens a lot that the different parts has different time signatures. I cannot find the right tool to create this. Without doubt it is not so difficult. Maybe someone has a hint? Thank you in advance.
Hi @Nicolaas_Ravenstijn – you can input independent time signatures on each staff, absolutely. See here:
Just note that a crotchet (quarter note) always equals a crotchet: so if you want 12/8 against 4/4, say, you’ll need to handle that a bit differently. Here’s an article that explains that really well:
Thank you very much Lillie. It is quite simple. A little bit hard to find in the documentation.
Sorry to hear that: what were you searching for, out of interest? it might be that I can improve search results.
To amplify the point: when you reply to Lillie, @Nicolaas_Ravenstijn, please let her know any exact search terms/phrases you typed. On occasion I notice that a particular term I use doesn’t return search results.
Hi Lillie,
I put “different time signatures different parts” in the search-engine and “parts with different time signature”. Then I came at the beginning of the Time signature popover. There is al lot of excellent information, but I missed the shortcut you gave at that stands about one third of the document. But anyway, I know what to do now. Thank you again.
Nico
That’s very useful to know, thank you. I’ll see if I can improve results for those terms.
I remember searching for this some time ago with independent time signatures and not getting a search hit, FWIW.
I follow how this works at the start, using a “pick up” bar, but what if I want to change a couple instruments to 4/4 for a passage in the middle of a piece? Most of the orchestra is in 3/2 and then a few instruments play a swing/jazz passage in 4/4 against that. I could write it in dotted 8ths and tell them to swing, but that is a bit awkward looking. I’d like to write those parts in 4/4 with the same bar lines as the rest of the orchestra. (There is a walking bass line written in dotted quarters, providing the “4” pulse.). I know how to get the music in with tuplets but am looking for the best way to get the independent 4/4 meter into those parts. Currently, I’ve put all the individual characters for the 4/4 and then the return to 3/2 one by one, positioning them in Engrave mode. Cumbersome, but maybe that is best for now?
There is no need to add text and position manually! Hidden tuplets is in fact the right way to do this. With 3/2 it’s almost the same as I explained here recently with 12/8 (click the link):
The only differences are:
- Hidden 3/2 instead of 12/8 in the following bar, and
- Use a 2:3h tuplet in each bar instead of 2:3e.
Thank you!
