For educational purposes, I’d really like a quick and easy way to insert guitar chord diagrams at specific places where they’re beneficial.
As far as I know, currently, to display a specific diagram in a specific spot, you have to:
Enable chord diagrams for the entire instrument.
Then manually hide diagrams for all other chords.
In my opinion, having a simple toggle in the properties panel to show or hide the chord diagram would be very helpful.
I’d also really appreciate a more intuitive way to customize the chord symbol—ideally, by just double-clicking the chord diagram to edit it, instead of having to add a new chord to the library and select it from a long list of variants.
In my use case, chord diagrams often reflect more than just the standard voicing—they can indicate how a melody note is harmonized in a specific moment (such as in chord-melody arrangements). These can be unconventional chords that wouldn’t typically be added to a default chord library.
I understand and value the goal of creating a systematic approach, which works well for standardized songbooks with reference chords.
But from my perspective, the current system feels a bit too rigid for other use cases…
Thanks for your response. Yes, I’m aware of that (though I should have explained it more clearly). My request is for the toggle to always be available.
If I want to use a diagram in just 3 out of 50 cases, Dorico still creates default chord diagrams for all the others, which I then have to manually hide.
The default setting to show or hide diagrams is great — but it should be customizable in both directions.
In Engrave Mode, if I’m not mistaken, you can do exactly that…
And I do second the motion of being able to show Diagrams for single instances of chord without having to enable them for the whole score and then switch off all of them, just to switch one or two back on…
I’ve been experimenting a bit more. Another issue when using chord diagrams only in some places is that they affect the vertical position of the other chord symbols.
One more item on my wishlist would be the ability to highlight the root note of a chord for educational purposes. Bonus points if it’s possible to show it as a point of orientation even when it isn’t being played as in the second example.
The scaling of chord diagrams in Engrave Mode currently affects both the chord diagram and the chord symbol together. Yes, I know most settings are ideally adjusted globally, but I do think there are cases where users might want to adjust them independently .
Tagging @dspreadbury — perhaps some of these ideas could be considered for a future version of Dorico?
