i make music on macbook M2 in my main studio, i have RME interface with lot of connections.
When i take my laptop (every day when i leave, tour, go home and work there etc etc) and want to work on my headphones, i have to do a LOT of work to get any sound.
This has been going on for years, but today i got very tired from it. I use Connections presets, but still its a lot of settings i have to go through:
Turn on lappie
Open Cubie
Open project
Play, no sound
go to connections, no drivers loaded
go to studio setup
go to Audio System, check what soundcard is selected
select Build In Audio
go to Audio Settings, or was it Build-in Audio, or Audio settings? I need to select headphone from source.
Ah it was Audio Settings after all, i forgot
In Audio settings, go to Control Panel
under output, there is a hidden slide menu i have to drag to expose External Headphone.
I select it
I play music, no sound
I go to connections
pffff i still had the presets from studio loaded
i switched to laptop presets for inputs, then i switched to laptop presets for outputs, then i switched to laptop presets for control room…
STILL NO SOUND
I went to audio device Control Panel again…external headphone wasnt selected, i select it again..
I play music…it works!!!
My wife calls me baby come diner is ready
really…???
can we have ONE profile i can load in File…Profiles that will load ALL these settings in ONE GO?
like Studio Preset, Tour Presets, Studio B preset etc etc etc
Hi,
you already named it: profiles. Just save dedicated profiles for studio, studio B and tour. They should take care of almost all these settings apart from Control room (needs a separate preset: F4 > CR > pick preset). The downside: you have to launch Cubase, pick a profile and then restart Cubase again in order to activate the selected profile.
Anyways, that should give you plenty of time to work with Cubase before dinner is ready.
Thank you for pointing out the tutorial on profiles, when I tried to use profiles I did not know it existed and I thought profiles were not properly documented. In my own tests at that time I thought profiles were a bit cumbersome to use and it did not seem to solve I/O configuration issues. I will try again with your post in mind!
However, I share the frustration of the OP regarding I/O management for laptops. I have my own reasons for using a laptop as my studio computer (limited time and being able to edit audio while feeding the kids is one) after years of using a dedicated desktop, and, honestly, I dream of having a single preset to recall all audio device & I/O configurations at once when switching locations.
Steinberg changed a few things over the past updates, for example the folder path for Control Room settings. I would have to look into it again to catch up since the brief manual has not been updated (it is missing crucial info anyways).
Audio device settings such as ASIO drivers are stored locally and not saved with a profile. Input connections are saved with a profile.
Profiles do a very good job, it’s a much overlooked feature. I constantly switch between two machines and the only thing I have to change manually after activating the profile is the Control Room preset.

i still need to switch the drivers and go throught the whole output mess

SOME NOTES:
-it seems this Profile option could use an overhaul. its looks pretty raw and could potentially be awesome (for me). its a bit confusing AND you need to restart Cubase.
-First time i created a profile it totally wiped all prefs and settings and took ages to load, due plugin scans and lots of problems. Apperantly you Duplicate the excisting setup (called Default) and when activating that it just works normally. This cost me more than half hour of waiting for the scan to finish, i had a nice coffee break.
-There is no “update” function as far as i can see. So if you make changes and want to keep in Profile you need to duplicate again.
-Maybe Profiles menu belongs in File… not in Edit…
After all, its like Template/Library a bit…
I almost never go to the Edit menu since i do most of it by key commands.
Yes, that’s what you need to do if you start Cubase. In the Hub, you can do that in the top right corner before you load a project. That’s a very useful feature IMO.
Here, a Profiles also sets up the correct Inputs. The Control Room preset needs to be picked manually as I said earlier before. Just takes 3 seconds, it has become second nature here.
Agreed, it could definetly need some TLC and yes, it’s an awesome function!
It would be terrific if you could load a Profile from the Hub to avoid restarting Cubase. I’m with you.
The manual is not a good advocate for Profiles. It’s missing crucial information, is quite confusing and leads to misunderstandings. That’s why I created the little Manual on Profiles back then ( I also posted the link in my first reply for a reason because I ran into the same difficulties when I first used Profiles…)
That’s not the case. The current Profile is always up to date and includes all changes you’ve made during the session. BUT it will only be written into the Profile when you exit Cubase. In other words: If you want to create a new Profile based on the currently active Profile then it won’t include the latest changes. On the other hand, if you are happy with it’s name you can just close Cubase and you have your updated profile. No extra work.
BTW: If you want to regularly update and synchronize two systems I can highly recommend this fantastic Backup & Restore Utility programmed by @ASM . It includes Profiles and it’s an amazing time saver.
thank you for the detailed “manuals” of backing up stuff, but the Profile function still doesnt work for me…
when i leave the studio i still need to manually switch drivers
maybe its a hardware/mac thing?
im talking about actually using a different interface on my macbook, not just saving my output settings
on top of this i had to wait 3 times very long to re-scan all my plugins, and still outputs didnt get saved… its all very confusing and this should all be re-written if i want to use this daily.
maybe others can use this on new macbooks when on the road, but i really dont have time for this…
it should be very simple:
Files → Profiles → Save Current State or Create New Profile, done. No restart.
then everything gets saved as is…not restart, no scanning, just saving ALL settings like Prefs, plugin scan, colors, library settings, outputs, control room, system settings, buffer settings, metronome settings etc etc
While we are on it, we could also release a Cubase Really Pro version, where you can choose what the profile saves. Maybe even turn off complete menu functions we dont need as regular joe dance pop music producer (i never used score stuff in my life).
Then we could share profiles, and give people simplified profiles (where 50% of menu entries are gone so its easier to start with Cubase for beginners as example).

did you save your inputs, outputs and control room setup as individual presets under F4 Audio Connections? These presets are definetly saved within a profile *srf - I did that just yesterday on another system with another audiointerface and it worked. Maybe that’s the culprit?
Again, I’m with you when it comes to the need of a serious overhaul of Profiles including a proper documentation!
It would be nice to know exactly what Profiles do and what they save. Let’s say you have all your key commands saved in a profile. Good. But what about macros and associated Project Logical Editor user presets - another potential pit.
Once you’ve learned about all that, Profiles are fantastic! But getting there…oh my…
It would be awesome to be able to create a whole backup in one go like in Reaper. Very user friendly and inspiring at the same time. Let Cubase check all folders, back them up and load them back.
If it’s a new Control Room preset then you have to save restart first. Like with all other changes - they got baked into the profile during closing Cubase. Afterwards, there’s no need to do follow any procedure apart from the one described above. BTW, RME rules
