Too many steps to just make a new project

I’m using Cubase 15 pro

To create a new project:
Press ”Create empty” button in the hub
Locate folder where I keep all my projects (why am I not already in that folder as I used to??)
Right click, make new folder. Name the folder. Mark/open that folder so Cubase knows this is the new project folder

Sigh.. too much stuff and steps
I remember this as being easier and more direct before..

Any way to make it faster, more direct or have the main projects folder memorized by Cubase?

EDIT: ok I see I can use “Use Default Location”. That helps..

I would highly recommend to use “Create Empty” only for creating a template. After that I would always start from a template.
While this does not necessarily reduce the amount of clicks in the hub, it will reduce the amount of clicks in the project when starting to work.

Thank you. How do I create a template?
At one point I had a “create new” button. Now it’s gone and I can only open templates
I have a “choose file” button. I guess that’s not it

You create an empty project, then set up everything the way you like it (e.g. Sample Rate, tracks you always will use), then go to menu File → Save as Template…

You might have to go into the Media Bay (Media → Media Bay) afterwards, right click the User Content folder in the left zone File Browser and perform a Quick Rescan. On some systems, like mine, Media Bay needs a kick in the behind to find newly created files.

Ok. And then when I want to make a new song, I just click on that template?
How does that deal with folder/name/location etc.?

Yes, you (double) click the template in the hub.
It will still ask you for the project folder, or use the default location entered in the hub respectively. This is just how Cubase is built.
But there are plenty of settings that get stored in a project file. Since a template is nothing but a project file stored in a particular folder on your hard drive anything you can set up in a project will be saved in a template as well.

Ok. But then I have to remember to save as a new project, to avoid changing the template itself?

You can only overwrite the template by using the Save as Template menu entry, then select the old template from the dialog and click OK.
If you use “Save” you will be prompted to save a regular project file. Don’t worry.

Ok thanks for your helps

The only time you can overwrite a template is when you are using Save as template.

Keep a custom template of your own, the way you like and need it and work of that.

I totally agree.

That‘s why I always start Logic just for quick tryouts or plugin version checks!

In Logic you can open very quick an empty project and choose later when saving the wanted destination. In the meantime everything is managed in unvisible temp directories.

Aside from templates, I also have a bunch of projects for sketches ready to mess with.
Some more targeted for real instruments, some more for synths and beats, etc…
Makes logging down an idea quick !
Then if I like it, I use the backup project option to then create the new folder and file structure for it. Then next time I open the sketch project I remove the stuff that was used and transfered to the new location.

Hope that helps

It literally takes me 10 seconds to open an empty Cubase project. You would need to do these 2 one-time setup things to be fast like me  :

  1. Save a file as a template. Can be empty, mostly empty - mine is called “Empty Categories” and contains some basic folder setups and not much else.
  2. Under “Hub Settings” on the first Cubase screen that opens, set your default directory and check “Use Default Location”. Then it won’t ask you for a directory any more. My default location is called “..\empty trying stuff”. If you want to save it later you can save it wherever you want, including a new different directory.

I’m not getting this thread.
I double click on the my Cubase short cut icon.
The hub opens, I click on my start up template or the project that I’m working on.
And off I go.
30 seconds at most.

The OP found a way that works for them. It’s @BlaRipley who prefers Logic over Cubase for quick sketches and who joined the discussion at some point.
Cubase works perfectly well for me, too.
However, each to their own :+1: Nothing wrong with that

At most. It’s a hard life!

Here, Cubase auto-launches the moment I enter the room. It’s the logic step in presence of inspiration.

It helped a lot to set the default folder and new project name

And then I use a template now

So now the problem is pretty much gone :+1:

Track Presets are always a nice touch.
