Track delay in milliseconds doesn't function

Hey there,
The Track Delay function doesn’t seem to be functioning as expected; changing the values doesn’t produce any noticeable changes. I can see in the audio performance meters that the disk cache is jumping, so there is something going on, but on the audio/midi track nothings changes. I am not sure if I am missing something in my configuration or it’s a bug. I have search the user manual; little or no information. Any idea how to fix the issue?
Thank you in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum,

The Audio Events/Parts and the MIDI Parts don’t move. That’s the trick. They stay in the Grid, but they are processed earlier/later. So you can only hear the difference.

Does a minus figure mean it will shift before the beat, or after it?

Thank you Martin!
The thing that threw me was that in previous versions we could see the changes in real time. Which was cool for creative uses of this function. It would be great if there was choice of whether to observe the changes or not.
Kind regards,

Normally before the beat

Hi,

What exactly do you mean, please? It never moved the data in the track. It was always working the very same way, because the idea behind is to be able to keep the data in the Grid, but send it to process is earlier (or later). What is very usefull for the sounds with longer attack time.

As the manual says:

Delay
Allows you to adjust the playback timing of the track.

Well before I used to use it create a little groove on some tracks for example high hats on a midi track, where the beat sounded too straight and mechanical being exactly on the beat, and moving the track a few milliseconds forwards or backwards would give it a less robotic feel (to my ear). And, I remember you could zoom in and see the track move as changed the values in the Track delay settings. You can do the same thing with by offsetting the Start/Offset in the File Info Line.

I wonder if anyone else remembers this…

I can´t remember such a behaviour in previous versions. Maybe you are confusing track delay with the nudge function? The latter also has a visual impact.

Thank you Reco29!
I have just discovered the nudge function.
However, I was quite sure it was the Track delay function I used, but now I am having a few doubts

Kind regards

I’d go with the doubts theory. I just fired up Cubase 7.5, my oldest installed, and checked its behavior. Even then it only impacted playback.

Besides the Nudge feature you might also have moved it by dragging the Start Position on the Info Line. That’s actually my go-to for dialing in positions.
