I would love if there was a feature to help me convert:
The midi parts is so fast and easy to move and convert in Cubase but when going from rack to track instruments is quite tedious. (I want to keep automation, the instrument settings, the modulations and the channel settings and routing..
I never use track instruments for this very reason.
Try this:
To copy the vst settings you can eight click on the track vst in the list and copy the settings, then right click on the rack instrument you created and paste settings.
Then go to to the channel on the mix console from your track instrument and copy first selected channel settings and paste them to output for new rack instrument.
That leaves automation. I believe You will have to manually setup the new lanes on the rack instrument and any inserts you have automated and then copy and paste. A bit tedious but should work. Would be nice if there was a copy /paste all automation.
Sometimes the automation doesn’t like to paste. To get around this you can create an audio track, and then open up the volume automation lane and paste into that. From there you can paste back into the new automation lane for rack instrument. I know it sounds weird but actually works.
The copy+paste of vst settings from a rack- to a track-instrument is a godsend in itself. Thanks for sharing.
Just had to do this for 15 project files with 5-10 instruments each. Not a great experience, sheesh.
I’m sure Steinberg can make this less painful. Just detect if the track you selected is a VST rack item, and in that case just include the things automatically to a Track Preset or into the Import | Tracks from Project feature, as if the rack item was an instrument track. Or even less of a hassle, just have a checkbox like “Convert rack items to instrument tracks”, or the same option “Convert to instrument track” in the track context menu.
As time goes on, I’m sure there will be a lot of people trying to do this and finding it less than pleasant.
I am moving away from MIDI and Rack tracks. Now just want to use Instrument tracks only (of these three types). Currently going through the tedious process but loving the results so far. Fortunately, my Rack tracks didn’t have automation etc to make this more of a hassle. I agree it would be great if there was a feature to convert Rack to Instrument and vice versa.
