I’m a mastering engineer who began life in the analog multitrack age. I have some friends who would like to record at my place, and I’d like to dip a toe into the world of recording software.
I have some good mics and 16 channels of mic pres via two Metric Halo ULN-8’s. Though I don’t want to spend thousands on software, price is not as important to me as ease of use and a less painful learning curve.
Logic? Cubase? Nuendo? MIO Console? What are your thoughts? I am grateful for every suggestion.
I do realize this is somewhat out of range for issues related to WaveLab, but as a user I’m looking for WaveLab-esque software if such a thing exists.
Thank you!

It’s really a strange question to ask in Wavelab Forum but whatever works.
In a couple of days i’m sure you’ll have dozens of different answers, afterall, most DAWs do exactly the same but with different shortcuts and different graphics.
It’s all based on user preference.
I suggest you try yourself by downloading and installing a few that seem to be more “pleasing to the eye” as in the end, you’ll spend hours looking at it.
Still, to accomodate your request and launch you on the mission of “DAW searching” here goes:
. Nuendo - same “factory” as Wavelab.
. Reaper - least expensive and the graphics can be totally changed to some really beautiful GUIs.
. Adobe Audition - if you don’t need MIDI, there’s a B-side to Audition wich is very much a multitrack recorder. The A-side is a direct competitor to Wavelab as it does exactly the same stuff as WL.
. Logic - seems to be quite en vogue nowadays.
. Magix Sequoia - my favourite, the one i use. It’s similar to Nuendo but for me, it’s waaaaay better.
. Magix Samplitude . if Sequoia is Magix’s Nuendo then Samplitude is Magix’s Cubase. Same difference.
Good luck!

I settled on Reaper for almost everything other than Mastering. There is a learning curve to all the fancy things it can do, but it’s relatively straightforward to do the tape machine + console workflow, especially when it comes to channel defaults/presets and templates.
If I ever went back to making dance music, I’d probably go back to Ableton Live. It can do a lot more than that, but that’s how I learned to do that thing. I just never liked mixing in it (and I think that’s 95% down to the horizontal channel strip and only being able to see one at a time).
