I think there is a good case to be made for this feature,
However, I do not think that Automation should be included/integrated into current TrackVersion editing. That would get far too confusing.
Instead, Automations Lanes should each get their own Version system, ie, on the same channel, Pan Versions is separate from Volume Versions.
There can be a lot of finessing, experiments, minor adjustments, major adjustments and sculpting with automation in many contexts - whether trying to create an absolutely world-class mix, or doing sound-design, or just trying various experiments with plugin-chains.
I do a lot of FX-printing, ie controlled/automated delays that get recorded to a track, and sometimes I am doing many variations of the automation until I feel I have obtained a result that will further be mixed and tweaked. This consists usually of roughing in the automation, and then listening and tweaking the automation… But it’s sometimes annoying to not be able to easily revert back to my original roughed in automation to start a new direction of tweaks - maybe for example, I’ve decided to switch from 1/8th delay to 1/4.
