Tranport Controls on LaunchKey for VST Live

I’m on VST Live 3 and trying to get ANY of my gear to trigger the Transport of VST Live. I can’t get any Novation product LK25 or 49 or my LaunchControlXL 3 to start the transport. I can’t get VSL Live to learn it.

Obviously Cubase fires up straight away with a push of the tranport on pretty much everything, and I can slave it to my Octatrack or other groove boxes. Are either of these abilities not present for VST Live?

Hmmm, using MIDI ctrls. Did you set the MIDI port for your controller?

yes. using my actual midi interface or via the USB. I can see VST Live’s midi imput light blink when I hit Play on the keyboard. but when i try to assign anything in Actions, it won’t learn it. i can see what message the keyboard is sending through a midi monitor app, but i can’t get VST Live to listen to it.

Did you create a port for the input in “Devices/Connections”? Then, learn should work. Also maybe try “Devices/Actions and Shortcuts” and “Learn” there.

here you can see that my Launchkey is firing the following message when I hit the PLAY button

here is my Connection (number 9)

Here is my Actions. If I hit LEARN and hit a button or pad or a note, it will show up as learned, but not the PLAY button (or STOP)

I hit the RECORD button and it took it! (first time I tried that), but when I went back to main window and hit the RECORD button, it started playing (but treating the button as non-latching, which I fixed by switching from Toggle to Button in the UI column of Actions.

As mentioned, this Transport PLAY button definitely works. It does trigger Cubase to play. I’ll rummage around in the MIDI standard for a bit and see what I can find. It’s just strange.

I’ve asked the r/novation to weigh in to see if it’s an issue with my LaunchKey

Can you open VST Live’s MIDI Monitor and just screenshot the message received from Launchkey when pressing button for PLAY?

Nothing else, just hitting that very button. (You can clean up midi events in the monitor by double-mouse-click)

0xFA - this is a realtime message (“Start”) which is sent in conjunction with MIDI Clock (oxF8), which VST Live does not evaluate.

However, we may consider to accept 0xFA (“Start”) and 0xFB (“Continue”) as triggers for actions.

Thank you for your reply. It sure would be nice to have VST Live listen to this.

is it correct to assume this is also why I can’t use my sampler (Elektron Octotrack) to send transport control?

If you could screenshot the incoming message (VSTLIVE/Devices/Midi Monitor) when you press transport PLAY …

Probably yes.

pls try again with the next version.
