I’m have this really weird problem with the transposition/clef overrides. They simply don’t work. The sounds for the glockenspiel and chimes are an octave too high where they’re written, and I’m trying to change it so it sounds an octave lower. I’ve tried changing the octave and clefs, but they don’t change the notation or the sound. Everything looks and plays exactly the same no matter what octave or pitch I select in both the transposed and concert pitch columns. What the heck am I doing wrong??
Hi. If you want to change the playback (but not notation) you should tweak your expression map for those instruments, making sure the pitch is the one you need. But I don’t find problems with the glockenspiel (I use NotePerformer). Maybe I am wrong…
I have the same problem: on my current project the tuba parts in Eb and Bb refuse to transpose and take the treble clef.
Strange detail: the euphonium notates correctly in the same project.
We need a project file that demonstrate the problem.
I thought all tubas read in concert pitch, right? They don’t transpose in the same way saxophones, trumpets, clarinets, etc do. The transposition refers to the size of the instrument and the fingering the player will use, but I thought they are all notated in concert. I’m not a brass player so maybe I’m wrong about that, but if so the notation shouldn’t change with the different sized tubas.
Not sure if it’s the same, but in a British colliery brass band, the only instrument which doesn’t transpose is the bass trombone (and percussion of course). This is written at pitch in the bass clef.
There’s an explicit bass clef at the start of the C Tuba stave, i.e. one that was either added manually or imported in via MusicXML. In Write mode, select and delete it.
As per the note at the top of the relevant page in the documentation, “Overriding the default clef does not change any clefs you have input explicitly.”

I am a new user, and the Transposition/Clef overrides do not seem to work. I am merely using your provided Unshaken in Weise example. The bass clarinet part does not follow even your default setting for Concert pitch of C3. Furthermore, no changes that I make in the Transposition/Clef overrides for new, imported or supplied examples makes a change. I am on an M2 Mac laptop, running Sonoma 14.3. I am completely clueless why this feature does not seem to work for me.

You haven’t said whether you were attempting to make a Clef and Transposition Override to the Full Score or the Bass Clarinet part, but looking at the Wiese - Unshaken file, both the score and the part are set to transposed pitch. Setting an override for Transposed Pitch does seem to work here. I wouldn’t expect setting an override for Concert Pitch to make any difference unless you view whichever layout in Concert Pitch (which you can set quickly from the View menu or the bottom left corner of the main window).
Hey, thanks for the quick response. I am aware of the concert pitch, transposed pitch buttons on the bottom left. In Finale, I use this constantly. In the Unshaken example, for example, when I look either at the score or the bass clarinet part, I get a concert pitch, but the concert pitch is NOT at the right octave. It should show an octave lower. I had thought that would be able to control this through the Setup–>Clef and Transposition overrides so that it displays the correct concert pitch. I have had issues with this Clef and Transposition not working as I would expect. I had additionally imported through XML horn charts from Finale, and the imported parts also did not do this correctly. I did create a new Bari Sax staff, copy the Bari Sax part to the new staff, and the concert pitch was correct. Additionally, for Tenor Sax, I wanted to display Concert pitch NOT in treble clef, but in bass clef. Once again the Clef and Transposition overrides did NOT make the expected changes. The manual has been no help other than to confirm what I am attempting is the correct methodology…any clues?
Note here how the Bari Sax concert pitch is displayed as Treble clef. I could not change this in the Clef and Transpostions overrides.
I believe the right way to handle this is to change the instrument itself in Setup. There are 3 choices. You probably want the “Default” one.

That’s what I effectively did by creating a new instrument and copying the data to the newly created staff…however I still do not understand why the Clef and Transposition override panel does not do what it is obviously intended to do…what is it for if not for what I am attempting?
It’s mainly for making a part layout for another instrument from the same music, such as clarinet playing a sax part in a different transposition …
Yep…I see the “Forced” Clef issue and found that the XML imports have this issue, and see that there are several pre-defined types of “Tenor Sax” for instance including a “Bass-Clef Score” option. I will also try and create my own versions, for which the Clef and Transpositions panel might work since I am not re-defining an existing preset…thanks for your input!
