Transposition issue

Ok gurus, I’m at a loss with this one. I imported an xml of an old Finale file. Mostly needed small tweaks, but the transposition of Bari sax somehow went south. The Dorico 5.? file is attached for the sorcerers to figure out.

Open key composition as I would have it appear in the score (concert key, but will likely will be changed at final edit). But when I look at the part it’s an octave too high with a gazzilion ledger lines. If I change the clef in the part, it displays correctly, but also changes the score to treble and **sigh** another gazzilion ledger lines, which makes it not dithyrambic for reading. Everything I’ve tried with setup and layout options and octave transpositions makes a worse mess.

I’ve tried deleting the notes and reentering. Nope. Tried deleting the part altogether and recreating. Nope. All other instruments in the piece transpose correctly, even weirdos like F Horn! I know I’m missing something really simple but I can’t find it.

Hi @hijazgaraj,

  • you have a local clef for the baritone sax: select it and press Delete (otherwise it overrides other changes).

  • then you can change the instrument (always good, after an XML import!): click on the three dots near the instrument name, and change it to the desired one (try out the three possible choices, and see the results for score and part).

  • If you don’t find what you want, choose one that is good for the score, and right click on the Layout (in Setup mode, on the right panel) and choose Clef and Transposition overrides, and set what you need for the part.

Click on the first clef of the baritone sax. Notice it is highlighted. (If you click on any of the other clefs they won’t highlight). Once selected, press delete. I would select every clef at the start of an imported xml file to make sure this isn’t an issue. Now everything transposes correctly.

Another thing to consider. The signpost says “Atonal” for the key signature. If you want your music to be in a specific key, add the correct key signature. (XML files often don’t import the correct, if any key signature). Sometimes that will clear up the transposition issues.

I had hoped that this was the elegant solution, but alas no :frowning: . So I’m attaching a couple more files for the wizards to find the right spell.

I followed your steps to a “T” multiple times. I have slightly different menu options, maybe because I’m still on V. 5, but I muddled through. The results are the same as before. I can copy/paste from my xml import into a newly created blank template, but the Bari sax shows up in the new score in treble clef (concert key with unreasonable ledger lines). The transposition to the part however is correct, but if I change the concert key score to bass clef, it transposes the part into high arctic latitudes. My results below.

This piece was originally sketched in the last version of Finale using the “keyless” option at file creation. Which leads me to believe that something is paswonky in the conversion to xml? It made up a key signature of a bunch of flats that shouldn’t be there. So I include a portion of the xml import in case there’s something weird you guys can identify.

A further note: You will see the cello part has the same issue as b. sax. It’s in treble clef, should be bass or possibly tenor clef (but I avoid that option as much as possible!).

If deep surgery is necessary, I can send the the whole xml file. But the funky thing is the brass parts all transpose correctly. Only the BSax and cello.

My thanks for your advice!

Your instruments have been imported with clef overrides (you can select each individual clef). Select and delete each to remove the override, then in Setup change the instrument to the one you want.

This may seem to be some redundant steps, but it fixes your problem.

Hi @hijazgaraj,

please follow the suggested steps and you will be successful.

I made a video to show the workflow:

The same thing for the key signatures…

Here a video for the key signatures, and a further layout suggestion:

Do you mean do this to the imported xml and not my copy/paste new file?

Oh my, you’re now my guru. It worked! Do you do car repair also? House cleaning?

A bit deeper under the hood than I expected, but I now understand these changes need to be made to the xml import NOT to my new cut and paste file! That’s the source of my fail.

And a deep, deep thank you to all you sorcerers that reply so promptly with ideas and solutions for us Finale refugees.

I had to look this up. Don’t want to appear bragging, but this hasn’t happened for quite a while! Thx :+1:
