I can’t get a trill to sound a m2 second above the trill note. Here’s what happens in C major (automatically it plays C#).
I’ve tried all this (see below) but I don’t see any way to activate “Interval” in the “Trills” group. I know this only affects the playback and I can hide the sharp sign but hearing it drives me nuts. Please Help.
In the Properties panel, activate Interval in the Trills group.
Change the interval degree, expressed as the number of staff position steps, by changing the value in the value field.
Change the interval quality or total number of octave divisions from the trilled note in one of the following ways:
For trills in 12-EDO, select an interval quality from the menu.
For trills in other tonality systems, select a total number of octave divisions from the menu.
Together, the interval degree and either interval quality or total number of octave divisions specify the desired note name and accidental for the trilled-to note.
In C major an m2 trill starting at B natural is actually the trill without any additional accidental, because the minor second of B natural is C natural, the next note in the diatonic scale.
Thank you. Juddanby, your screenshot made all the difference because it’s the top part of this middle section (Show Local Only Global Only All) that allowed me to find the interval button and change the offset M2 trill. The problem for me is that since this WAS in C-major, why was the offset trill using a C#. But it’s corrected. I’m sure there must be shortcut. Thanks so much for the swift reponses.
It is odd, since, as @Vadian said, the “natural” thing should have been C…well, natural. Do you definitely have a key signature of C major in the score (you’d see a red signpost) as opposed to simply a no-key-sig-looks-like-C?
No you don’t need to do that. But the consequence of that choice is that trills will default to a major 2nd, and you will need to adjust the interval property.
One thing which I discovered while exploring this situation is that to specify the interval of a trill when using the ornaments popover, there needs to be a space after the tr. So, a trill of a minor second is entered in the popover as tr m2 (not trm2) and a trill of a major second is entered as tr M2 (not trM2).
Yes, but it’s also (as Janus pointed out) the basic things. Will I give my piece a key signature?
Dorico’s concept is, it will do the work for you. It can handle pieces with open tonality (w.o. key signature) brilliantly and it will do the same with C-Major or a-Minor. You just have to tell…
