Truly straight flags! —FINALLY!

I am aware I could have made the effort quite a bit ago but I had never had the will nor the motivation to delve into this.

The last composer for whom I was explicitly still using another program finally gave me a new assignment and, thanks to a friendlier climate at the moment, I took the plunge and configured (most of) the straight flags as requested. Behold!

I’m still missing 256, 512, and 1024ths and may do that tomorrow. If anyone is interested in this I will post an empty project or a doricolib file (if only music symbols can be exported like that, I am not sure, perhaps someone can advise).

Anyway… I just wanted to share how happy I am that I could finally realise this!

Dorico has the ability to generate horizontal flags without using the Edit Music Symbol dialog:

I entered the notes and rests, then selected each note separately and executed the command Edit > Notations > Beaming > Beam Together, and finally selected all of the notes and set the property Partial beam direction to Right.

However, changing the flags in the Edit Music Symbol dialog would make using horizontal flags more convenient than having to execute Beam Together on each short note separately.

It seems to me that, to cover all cases of horizontal flags, you have to use the dialog box Edit Music Symbol, and then edit all types of Combining Flag.

(The tune is « In dulci jubilo » - an old german christmas hymn where some lyric lines are in german, and other lines are in latin, symbolizing christmas night with angels singing in all languages)

The rests vs the vertically straight beams make my eyes bug out…not judging but I would probably go a little nuts looking at this for an period of time. Just my old brain and its expectations of symmetry in this setting…:slightly_smiling_face:

You are right, John. I was trying to find a method that would save me some time on a global scale. I could have created a macro including all the steps you mentioned in a single step.

As a plus, beaming notes together still works as it used to, as I do not plan to change all types of Combining Flag, just the single ones which is what this composer wants.
