Tuplets [5:4x] != [5:1q]?

Hello,

I am practicing following Dorico’s step by step guide.
I am at the tuplets part.

At bar 30 using the tuplets popover [5:4x] in this way I get the right result.
But writing the popover in this way [5:1q] I get the result in bar 31.
If I understood correctly the result of bar 31 should be the same as bar 30, because I want 5 sixteenth notes on a duration of 1 quarter note (1q).

Did I misunderstand the explanation of the guide or is it a bug?

Yes, you’ve misunderstood something. 5:1q means five quarter notes in the time of one quarter note. Which means 20 sixteenth notes in the time of four…

I’m gratified to hear that following the instructions as outlined in the guide produces the right results – that was definitely the intention.

  • 5:4x means “five 16th notes in the space normally occupied by four 16th notes”

  • 5:1q means “five quarter notes in the space normally occupied by one quarter note”

You can’t mix and match beat units; you can’t say “five 16ths in the space of one quarter”, for example.
